Or 'conjoined twins' for the more 'correct' term.

Conjoined twins are twins whose bodies are joined together at birth. This happens where the zygote of identical twins fails to completely separate. Conjoined twins occur in an estimated one in 200,000 births, with approximately half being stillborn. The overall survival rate for conjoined twins is between 5% and 25%. Conjoined twins are more likely to be female (70-75%). this disease only effects those of asian descent, thus the term "siamese" twins

So, what, god likes a bit of messing with zygotes? Where's the overall plan, good and/or mercy in this? Really, I am curious why a merciful god would allow things like this?

Evolution, not Gods. That'd be the answer. I think people are a bit touched in the head if they think that a benevolent deity would put humans through such torture.

There are all kinds of "bad things" that happen. But it's our job not to see them as "bad." That's where faith comes in.

Maybe the reason there are "siamese" twins - is so the many people who encounter them during their lifetimes can learn about compassion and/or acceptance. Maybe that's why. Or - maybe on the other side - God - or the angels - or somebody - said "Okay - we have this really cool assignment. Who wants to go over and spend their lives as "siamese twins?" - and then two souls - who really loved each other - volunteered. Who knows?

My FAITH tells me that God is pure LOVE. It doesn't like "a bit of messing with zygotes." It's plan is perfect and It know what It's doing.

One minor (or not) correction to your Q.. Conjoined twins were commonly known as "siamese" because of the Chang brothers who were from Siam.
There are conjoined twins of all nationalities and race... and it is not affective only in those of Asian descent.

I saw a news story yesterday about a different type of twin, though not co-joined. It seems like there is a combination twin type, thats in between identical and fraternal. What happens is 2 sperm fertilize the same ovum. The twins split and develop seperately. They are closer genetically than fraternal twins since they come from the same egg, but are not identical since they have different sperm. I know this doesnt have much to do with co-joined twins, but I have been wanting to talk about it since I saw the story!

I'm Atheist, so i really can't answer the whole "god' thing, but if I had to guess, I think Siamese twins are like every other defect in nature. I would guess that God lets us live and helps us when we pray, but doesn't pre-destine our fates and trials. my guess is that if you just do your best with whatever you have, that Jesus or Buddha or whoever will except you, no matter what religion you are as long as you were honest and fallowed the god you believed in.

This, of corse, means I'm going to hell....

oppss....

Just to clarify this doesn't just happen to those of asian descent. The term 'siamese twins' was coined due to one of the most famous conjoined twins being born in Siam in the 1800s.

Great question. The answer will not be found in conventional wisdom. God's ways are higher than ours. I think that it all goes back to the original sin of Adam and Eve. The world has changed, but the curses from that one act are still in effect today. It is the law of retributions. We reap what we sow. If you drink poison, your body suffers from the effects of that poison. God has to let somethings stand because of his mercy and grace.

what I think is that God doesn't make these things happen, but they are a part of creation. Everyone knows that the world isn't perfect, and neither is creation, but God doesn't go around trying to mess everything up. And in the same way, he doesn't go around trying to fix everything either. He gives us the freedom to choose to live however we like. And he gives us the freedom of creation. If you aren't going to take the bad with the good, that isn't God's fault.

This takes a lot of explaining. Most people do not like long answers. God does not cause these things. He allows them to happen but does not cause them to happen. Satan is the ruler of the world for now. Soon God will take back rule of the earth from Satan and will restore it to the paradise he intended for it to be in the first place. He will cleanse the earth of all evil and wickedness. Then people will never have to worry about birth defects, sickness, pain or death. People will be cured of all illnesses and will be able to live on earth forever. God will make it up to all who have suffered under Satans rule.

God doesn't "allow" things like that to happen for any reason. Things happen, good and bad, because we are a fallen race. God's mercy comes to play in inspiring doctors to know how to treat illness and issues like conjoined twins, in allowing us to come to Him for forgiveness of sin, in giving us second, and third, and 500th chances to get things right.
