Hell is a state of mind - and you can be there right here on earth. I don't think God has anybody burning in hell. But your choices in life can make you feel pretty bad - like hell.
Heaven - well - you can find heaven right here on earth too. Do we go there after we die? I'm not sure. I'm sure that whatever happens it's very peaceful and nurturing. Kind of like a nurturing/learning place. Or maybe - this is just it. We die and we're done. Or maybe heaven is whatever we want it to be. Just not sure.

Jesus spoke of them as real places; he never refered to them in the Gospels as psychological constructs.
Jesus refered to Hell as
Outer Darkness: Matt 22:13
Furnace of Fire: Matt 13:42
Bottomless Pit: Rev 20:1-3
In Luke 16:19-31, Jesus told a parable about a poor man in the "bosom of Abraham," and a rich man who "in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, ..." If this was just a parable, then it is the only one in the Bible that uses a personal name for one of the characters, "Lazarus."
In Revelation we read the most explicit descriptions of Hell and Heaven.
Revelation 20:14-15
14 Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. 15 And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

States of mind. We make them ourselves.
If you look at everything negatively, believe people are out to 'get you', assume the worst, surely your life will be hellish?
If you look for the good in people, take time to enjoy the small pleasures in life, a sunny day, a walk in the fresh air, a meal with friends, life can be heavenly.
Well, that's what I think anyway.

Let's see... they say you go to either Heaven or Hell when you die. So, if you are dead then your body shuts down (including the mind), leaving only your spirit. So your soul has to go somewhere after death * oh, yeah... Heaven or Hell.

Just as earth has different levels, (soil, air, water) heaven and hell also has different levels. (heaven has paradise) (hell has pergatory). It's as real as you are.
