I have been wondering about Buddhists who become extremely concerned about killing insects etc - were/are there protective sanctuaries for such people?

Sorry - I meant to say killing insects when walking on the ground

Thanks for the answers - I am asking about some sort of sanctuary - a friend had mentioned that she had heard that there were special places and this spurred my question. I am sympathetic as I am a vegetarian who carries ants etc outside.

We don't consider it "extreme concern" we call it "mindfulness" of trying not to harm other sentient beings, which we rank insects as part of that category. Buddhist monks in various monasteries have opportunity to be more mindful than the average citizen, but we all try to some degree or another to be mindful of all sentient life... even the stuff that's not sentient, like plants and the planet.

everything is fated - Buddhist may value the life of all living thing but since they are not in Nirvana yet, they may commit little sin which beyond their conscience. So all Buddhists must know this before they begin their training. The only sanctuary for Buddhists is Nirvana!

Oxymoron! Buddhist clergymen, by way of definition, can not be severe -- they comply with the "Middle Way"! More virtually, the period of monk-hair varies notably by way of culture. In the Tibetan culture, it is fashionably brief. In the Zen culture, it is bowling-ball soft. And, of path, monastic precepts forbid clergymen from dealing with cash -- so probably you will have to do not forget running within the monastery kitchen.

Well, my Tibetan Geshe would say that it was an unintentional action. He was ordained by the Dalai Lama and he walks around just like you or me.

Some even sweep the floor before they walk.

No. Not really. There are insects everywhere. You can't escape them. I walk around them, or catch them and put them outside. I don't ever kill them.

i think in Tibetan monasteries... at least, that's what i see in movies (seven years in Tibet, for ex, they were "translplanting" worms while digging so as not to kill them. )

Its impossible not to kill. You right now are killing millions of bacteria, in your body.
