Very interesting question !! IF you recall, before Jesus told Peter he would deny Him three times; Peter had stated that he would lay down his life for Jesus.

One of the quotes above is way off: Jesus told Peter..."satan has DEMANDED you....to be tested"...(vs 'asked)...This leads to a secret and powerful doctrine...satan can DEMAND??? Why? Who gave 'it' that authority? Does 'it' have that power now? How can a Christian be protected from this kind of agonizing test? etc.

At any rate, the same apostle who asked to 'walk on the water' with Jesus, who saw the Transfiguration, and witnessed many miricles of healing.. "seems to have failed" at a crucial moment. But, that is the key 'seems to have'. As I've written elsewhere, The Bible's archetypal accounts HAVE to be true; because no one could 'make this stuff up'.
The evil one works for bad; and God turns it into Good. Gawd, you know that has to make 'it' crazier and crazier !!!!

Ok....a few minutes earlier, Peter pledges his life for Jesus; Jesus tell him what will happen in the next few hours. What was going on !!!!! It is crucial that we Christians learn that our human will is Not Enough; when powerful evil forces come against us. Even Christ Himself, did not argue (during the Temptation) instead, He quoted the power of what had been written, in the Old Testament (btw: it the proper context, for that particular challenge...a highly important aspect of using the Word).

Thus, Peter...(a courageous man, a man who stepped up to the plate when the others' held back) found out that 'his will to power' was not quite enough and was HUMBLED. He was also devastated; but, that was the bedrock for the 'chosen man' to have the authority and training needed to carry on, and be a genuine leader.

P.S. did you know that 'will to power' is from the pen of fred niezche; as he channeled zarathust ?????

If he didn't then Jesus would have been wrong when He said Peter would deny Him 3 times and Jesus was perfect, so He could not say something that was wrong. You can also answer this by asking why people deny Him today. Fear of persecution. I think some of the others that "answered" this question are a little afraid themselves. If people can not give a true answer to a question, then just don't. Stick to questions that you can give insight to.

Peter denied Jesus because he was caught up in the moment. Just imagine the commotion around you as your best friend is being beaten and knowing that you'll probably be beaten too if you admit to being friends with Him. Peter let his emotion get in the way of Truth.

The stress of the time. Jesus told the apostles that Satan had "demanded to test THEM (PLURAL)."

30so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

Luke 22:31"Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you
(plural) as wheat. 32 But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers."

Jesus knew and prophesied what would happen. This was probably an essential part in Peter becoming the leader that was needed at the earliest times of Christianity.

... His fear was that he would be taken and tried along with Jesus. The apostles had already felt the power of the Holy Spirit at work in them, but still were afraid because they held on to the popular misconceptions of the Messiah as a political rather than a spiritual leader.

Out of fear. He was afraid that he will be beaten just as Jesus was. Actually, he wasn't suppose to follow. Jesus told him earlier that he wasn't suppose to follow him that night, but Peter didn't listen.

Because he was an imperfect person like the rest of us. He was afraid. However, after a strong dose of the Holy Spirit, on the day of Pentecost, he became a different person. (see Acts 2:14-41)

In the gospel of peter, which was left out of the bible (isn't it strange that it wasn't the word of god but other people's gospels are?) it says because jesus asked him to. Say no to jesus

not sure if this answers the angle of your question, but it answers the logic.

The denial was predicted by the Word of God.
It had to happen to fulfill what Jesus said....

When Jesus speaks, then those things must happen!!

Because Jesus was with Mary Magdalene after the Super Bowl. They went bowling and swimming.
