Exogenous (from a source outside of the body) hydrocortison lowers the amount of hydrocortisone that the body manufactures naturally (endogenous). An excessive amount causes osteoporosis, fluid retention and moon face as well as weight gain because it messes with carbohydrate metabolism. It also suppresses the immune system. The white blood cells are part of the immune system, so hydrocortisone suppresses production of white blood cells, thus lowering the white cell count. You have to be more careful about exposure to infection, etc.

It is used primarily to relieve inflammation from allergic type responses to irritants. It slows or retards healing of things like surgical wounds. If you are planning surgery, be sure and tell your surgeon.
