My daughter has just moved to Canada. I would like to send periodical care packages from home. I don't want her to have to pay to receive them though. What can I send without costing her?

I live in Canada, and all my family lives in the U.S.
It is true that when you cross the border you can carry with you gifts of $60 or less without paying duty. However, mailing packages is a different matter.

Duty is charged on packages over $25, however most of the time the contents of the packages are not checked. My family puts something general on the customs declaration (LOL, one time my Dad put "cupcakes" ... don't ask me why!) ... and then puts the value at around $20. Unless you are sending something obviously a lot more than that, you shouldn't have a problem.

Up to a value of $CDN 60 at a time is the limit but unlss you send stuff worth far more they usually let it pass as long as it is accurately declared.
