As annoying as telemarketers are, that might be the only job someone is physically able to do. You have to be able to stand and have function of one arm to flip burgers. Maybe they are vegan and don't believe in eating animals. I would rather have telemarketers than an increase in unemployment that leads to an increase in welfare, that I pay for with my hard earned money.

I used to work as a telemarketer for 3 different companies and the reason why I chose that job was because the pay was excellent and the jobs were VERY easy to get. They were always looking to hire a person.
Telemarketing jobs are taken just for that reason alone, just because of the ease of the job.
I've tried getting jobs at fast food restaurants, at the local baseball stadium and even as a bike delivery guy and I always had to jump through hoops to get those jobs, but not as a telemarketer.
However, there's a caveat. Those jobs are also VERY easy to lose.

Telemarketers exist because there is a demand for them. Whenever there is demand, supply springs up.
Marketers make extraordinary amounts of money by using telemarketing. People buy a lot from telemarketers.
Telemarketing is a hard job. Workers sit in tiny cubicles in a room without windows and talk with angry people.
Telemarketers often have other jobs but they need this extra job to make ends meet.

Because they need some extra cash to make a living, to pay their rent, to pay for food, to pay their debts, etc. Telemarketers get a big base pay which draws them in...and then they get commission per appointment/sale they make. This brings in a lot of $$$ for them. Flipping burger gets you minimum wage or slightly above so I guess telemarketing is better since it pays more. Everyone needs to do something to survive. Don't be so harsh...you never know the girl on the other line might just need an extra $100 to feed her kids and pay her rent.
EDIT/ADD: Its not just mothers im talking about. Some people cant afford their living with just one job! This is an easy way to get money fast to pay off their debts. Its easy to say things than to do it! Maybe you are not stuck in a tight spot so you wouldnt know but dont try to put others down that go that route to earn money.

Hey, I have a real job! I work as a telemarketer at my 2nd job. The pay is crap, but they are flexible with my hours. I am also in Nursing school. Before you are so quick to judge people, you should stop and think. I am in school full time, I have a decent paying "1st" job (40 hrs per week), and I work my 2nd job (10 hrs per week) to ensure that my family is well taken care of. I have plenty of skills. I was an electrician for three years. I've been an administrative assistant, a plumber, and a medical assistant.

i don't think we could or should blame telemarketers for bugging us. it's actually their job to do so. it would be the companies who demand to have telemarketers who should be blamed. but it's their money they're putting in this type of sales and marketing strategy. it's like real-time advertising and sales, instead of us watching TV with ads, we listen to these people over the phone.
i actually pity those individuals working as telemarketers because some companies demand too much from them to the point that they have to close the sale/deal no matter what. they have quotas and deadlines to meet. but, like in any other industry, these people are also abused by multi-million companies --- companies want lower costs but would like higher sales.

It is a job to them, but a lot of them are under 18, so they are doing it for extra money. Now, with the do not call list going around, these jobs will be less and less. Unfortunatly, they won't all go away, but at least they don't call me anymore.

Cause they enjoy bothering people. By the way, i have a couple of things you could say to pestering telemarketers: Tell them to talk VERY SLOWLY, because you want to write EVERY WORD down.
Insist that the caller is really your buddy Leon, playing a joke. "Come on Leon, cut it out! Seriously, Leon, how's your momma?"
Tell the telemarketer you are busy at the moment and ask them if they will give you their HOME phone number so you can call them back. When the telemarketer explains that they cannot give out their HOME number, you say "I guess you don't want anyone bothering you at home, right?" The telemarketer will agree and you say, "Now you know how I feel!"
After the telemarketer gives their spiel, ask him/her to marry you. When they get all flustered, tell them that you could not just give your credit card number to a complete stranger.
Tell the telemarketer you are on "home incarceration" and ask if they could bring you a case of beer and some chips.
If they want to loan you money, tell them you just filed for bankruptcy and you could sure use some money.
If MCI calls trying to get you to sign up for the Family and Friends plan, reply, in as SINISTER a voice as you can, "I don't have any friends... would you be my friend?"
Cry out in surprise, "Judy! Is that you? Oh my God! Judy, how have you been?" Hopefully, this will give Judy a few brief moments of pause as she tries to figure out where the hell she could know you from.
If they say they're John Doe from XYZ Company, ask them to spell their name. Then ask them to spell the company name. Then ask them where it is located. Continue asking them personal questions or questions about their company for as long as necessary.
When they ask "How are you today?" Tell them! "I'm so glad you asked because no one these days seems to care, and I have all these problems; my arthritis is acting up, my eyelashes are sore, my dog just died..."
hope these helped and have a great day!
