Passport Canada is always updating their site to reflect the current times for passports. Here is what it says currently:

Passport Canada is experiencing a sharp volume increase in passport applications in all of its offices, by mail and through its receiving agents. Due to this increase in volume, it may take up to 10 weeks before you receive your new passport.

What kind of ID do you need?
Submitting your application
To avoid any delays, ensure that you have included all the following with your completed passport application form:

1) a proof of Canadian citizenship,
Proof of Canadian citizenship
If you were born in Canada, you must provide an original of either:
a Canadian birth certificate (issued in Canada by the province or territory of your birth), or
a Certificate of Canadian Citizenship

2) supplementary identification,
Documents to support identity
At least ONE document to support your identity and the name to appear in the passport must be submitted with your application form. Further documentation may be required. For a child, only the proof of Canadian citizenship is required.

Documentation to support your identity must be issued by a federal, provincial or municipal authority, must be valid and must include the bearer's name and signature. For example:

Provincial driver's licence
Provincial health care card
Other provincial identification card
Certificate of Indian Status
Firearms Licence - Possession - Acquisition
Old Age Security card
Other federal identification card
Federal, provincial or municipal employee identification card
Canadian passport

3) the photos signed by the guarantor,
4) the required fees, and
5) any valid travel document, if applicable

My suggestion....go to a Service Canada Receiving Office if you can't make it to a Passport Office. They will check everything over for you and make sure BEFORE you submit your application that it is all in order. There are a lot of applications coming through that are missing signatures or aren't the right documents which are being returned to applicants. That delays your application that much more; and is frustrating for not only you, but the passport agemts too.

They are saying right now that the wait can be up to 8 weeks because of delays, however if you walk it in (instead of mail it) and are lucky it can be anywhere from 1-4 weeks.

As for ID you will need two pieces of government issued photo ID (health card/licence/age of majority card) or a piece of photo ID and a birth certificate. If you mail it in, you can either mail in the actual ID or a notorized photocopy of the ID.

When you get the forms to fill it out, it will tell you exactly what they can and cannot accept for everything, so I wouldn't be overly concerned until you get to that part!

Usually can get one in 2-4 weeks, but there is a long wait now because of the new restrictions for travel to USA by air. It has caused a backlog in the processing of up to one month extra.
