To control you. Fear tactics work. Look at what the likes of Hitler or Saddam Hussein or any other fear monger accomplished through the application of fear. Nothing like a little fear to motivate your average human.

P.S. to Mr. Religion: "God hates all sin" -- isn't hate a sin?

I don't think religion teaches us that God would put us into hell. God gave us a free will, and if we decided to take the wrong path and commit sin, then we cannot blame God.. There is good and bad, in all of us, we have a choice. If we want to go to heaven or hell.

Incentivation .......................
All Religions have had their "Boogeyman", their Threatening element. Even if it is justified as "out Actions place us there" is still about a Place "Created" by a "Creator" who will put us there....
UNLESS....
The Place called Hell is where God is not... i.e. Hell is a Place where God Does not abide in any sense. And I mean this Fully; Since if God Made Hell in the Burning Sense, then God Must in some way , shape, or form, be IN Hell, or have some cognizant Knowledge of Hell....

God doesn't put you in hell, you choose to go to hell. Hell is a place where God doesn't dwell and if you chose to ignore God during your life then when you die God says "Ok fine" and casts you from his presence. The only problem is, without God there is nothing good or happy, so hell will be a pretty miserable place with nothing but pain and sadness.

I don't understand why so many still think hell, the ground we all walk on is so bad.
We all get buried there and Jesus says we sleep there till the resurrection. He demonstrated that death isn't forever.
He raised Lazarus in plain site of a crowd.
He proved to a crowd that he is Gods begotten son.
He told John what to write when he was on a Island miles away from the Church's John wrote to.
But I'm running off in the wrong direction.
The answer to your question is God loves us, and we were never made for suffering at all. He does punish for sins, but it isn't permanent. (Without repentance, it could be)
What would be the point in punishment if he were going to destroy us?

The purpose of hell is obvious. Religions used to spread through fear and threats of violence. I'm still offended when such nonsense is used to attack people who have a different philosophy on the existence of god.

Catholics simulated Hell during the Inquisition through torture. They made their threats of hellfire so real that they mutilated and incinerated accused "witches" and "heretics" without evidence. This is one example of how people use hell to justify their wanton destruction of human life.

Religion has propped up evil and unhealthy behaviors for thousands of years. Hell is just one extension of that mentality.

Yes, it is true religion does speak about it many times but mostly taken out of context. Please take note there's no direct reference in the Bible or Quran(probably) where God specifically created Hell the way religious people visualized something like burning house full of suffering souls and Satan with his "fork" laughing out loud.

Hell is a description of state where a soul undergoes series of learning stages to reach perfection and elevate oneself and align to the will of God. It is not eternal, though seemingly almost, as one has to undergo continuous birth and death cycle to work out his karma. Hell, so to speak, refers to one's entrapment to the physical body learning the art of Godhood on the physical plane. Only through achieving perfection that one can elevate itself from gross materialization to spiritual form permanently. So hell is not really such a bad thing but offers opportunity to every soul to become a matured being transforming innocence to wise.

well the religion doesn t teach that, i think im catholic.
the religion catholic work with metaphores ( for example the story of snake and adao e eva - they don´t have really existing. it´s a metaphore .it say it on the bible,
when they talk about hell they usually explain that the "hell" its the dark.
when we died our souls should go to the way of light - thats why peolple put candles - light to the deadth people.
so the "hell" for our souls its a place, that is no light.

Simply put, it's because we deserve it.
The Bible says, "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God". We cannot enter His perfect presence in our sinful natures. That's why Jesus came to save us. "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him will have everlasting life." God is so gracious and merciful!
It's a choice each of us has to make. Are you aware of your sin and depravity and need for God and love Him enough to live for Him and give your life to Him? Or would you rather be separated from Him for eternity? The choice is yours.
