Repent means to admit means to know or to be aware the word repent is old english description to confess
Repentance is no mystery if you own up to your faults that means you have a soul not a shallow being you are not shallow for being a man and owning up to your faults or mistakes there is no shame in owning up to your faults
but as the gospel which some crazy charlie mansion or jim jones people christains make it a mystery or a shall a say walking on broken glass theology
all it is that jesus came to restore all things were gods people left off and they aint no pretty either 99% of all gods displeasure came from gods people
your answer is clear and simple its by faith not of works the former works of god are forgoting thats why we call it the new testament
in the upperroom apostle paul and all the others were fighting and arguing -gee even apostles disobey their own commandments its by faith and faith only this was disputed by the early christian church and there was not reached a absolute conculsion so even though there wasn't a conculsion even james says faith without works is dead he is only commenting on the condition of faith ...dont pay attention to that because there are examples of faith without works in the gospel mark luke john matthew but only when there is works of miracles it required works to show those of no faith example was thomas the worst of all doubters putting the fingers in jesuses palms the holes of the nails thats were you get the touch and be healed faith
the answer is faith only because if its your mistakes that make you evil then how does my mistakes make me righteous that is what apostle paul is saying

The two things go hand-in-hand. It's no use saying you accept Christ, if you then ignore everything he said and live no differently than you did before. That sort of faith is on the lips only, and not in the whole of your being. On the other hand, thinking that you can somehow "earn" your way to the kingdom, by just following all the right rules of behavior, without any real love for God, is the same cynical mistake the Pharisees made. Our faith in God must show in our lives, or it is a dead faith. And our works must be motivated by love, not base calculation, otherwise they are dead works.

If Jesus died for every ones sins, there is no need to repent. Wasn't that the whole idea behind his death? So that every one could go to heaven?
John 3:16 - For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
Acts 5:31- 31 God exalted him to his own right hand as Prince and Savior that he might give repentance and forgiveness of sins to Israel.
Acts 10:43 - 43 All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.
Ephesians 1:7 - 7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace,
Colossians 1:13-14 - 13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, 14 in whom we have redemption,[a] the forgiveness of sins.

Works are a natural progression and symtom of an inward change. Repentance is a change of mind,will, and direction,concerning the subject of sin and life on our own terms.
We are saved by Grace(unmerited favor)alone,through faith in the attoning power of the Blood shed on the cross at Golgotha.
We are escaping the righteous wrath of God,that was poured out in the sacrifice of Jesus,the Son of God.

It is by both, the story of the Prodigal Son makes this very obvious,
"He returns after plundering it all, sinful and stated, I have recklessly forgotten Your glory, O Father;
And among sinners I have scattered the riches which You gave to me.
And now I cry to You as the Prodigal:
I have sinned before You, O merciful Father;
Receive me as a penitent and make me as one of Your hired servants".
He was willing to do both, but the sincerity of his heart lead the Lord, his Father, to forgive him. Both are needed and both are the way to repentence.

It is as you said the first time. Repentance as Jesus was saying was for people to forsake and turn away from their previous beliefs/ideologies that was sinful and to except Christ along with his teachings. The bible teaches that we are not saved by works nor would good works get you into heaven but only by accepting Jesus Christ as your lord and Savior. Which is located in Romans 10:9 "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved."
However when you do good works you will be rewarded for them when you get to heaven.
If you was asking how should a christian repent if they have sinned. The answer is this.
1 John 1:9 says "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."
So you literally confess out of your mouth to God your sins and ask him to forgive you of them in the name of Jesus. You ask in Jesus name because Jesus died once and for all for the sins of humanity and only through him can are sins be forgiven.

Repentence means to "turn away" from your sins, not merely saying you are sorry for doing them.
If your sin is stealing and you truly want to repent, do not steal anymore. If you continue to steal, you are not really repenting.
Faith alone will NOT save you.
"Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? James 2:17-20

Repentence means being truly sorry for what you've done and learning from the mistake, and not repeating the mistake. It has nothing to do with obedience.

It is not by any of your works or deeds that you are saved. Jesus paid the price. You simply have to ask for His forgiveness and live right. Remember we all fall short of the goodness of the Lord. Faith without works is dead. Let God be seen in all that you do, that is all that is asked, simply walk in His likeness.
