First, most people chose to ignore the deeper issue that you address. The idea scholorships for only one RACE. I agree about what people say that BET is there because TV is represented by all white people mostly. It's true. But that is MEDIA. The media is thruly corrupt and tainted it's not a scholarly avenue of debate, it's entertainment and it won't change soon. BUt you are talking about scholarships and social activist groups...that's another can of worms entirely!!
to that...

Yes, I agree...somewhat.

PLEASE, nobody take offense to what I say following. I am a muslim and believe all people of all races are EQUAL, like Malcolm X believed.

But there has to be end where people realize that it's better to focus money and energy on people that live like MODERN thinkers and judge people based on there merit not their skin colour/race/religion etc. At one point, the united ***** college fund was necessary to get them into college...buuuuuuuut now we have surpassed the hurdle. now it's could be taken advantage of and used immorally as a way for black people to gain sympathy by playing off old resolved issues. I whole-hearted oppose all racism of ANY kind. But I think there needs to be an END to social lobbying when the issues are long gone and resolved. Instead of rehashing old horror stories of torture that our grandfathers might have mistakenly, unwittingly partaken in, people should MOVE on and help bring more things to the world not make it depressing.
Personaly, I think giving money at people doesn't solve anything. You have to TRAIN them and teach them and give them jobs! not money. Money can be used and abused but training lasts for ever. I think the college fund should spend their money on creating opportunities for research in feilds of black achievement. They don't need to desparately try to get black people in college JUST to fill a quota or have them visually there. they need to create jobs and feilds in the industry where black people can truthfully REPRESENT their beliefs and culture. For example, they could give a black person a scholarship but what if that kid doesn't live black culture?? then the kid just took the money and got a free ride, whereas a cultural kid would have represented his race....that opens a can of worms and makes people want to divide themselves by race...so I think we need social charities to help people who are poor/oppressed (period)...it WAS black people...but not now. now there are some very rich black people living in America, and some poor phillipino and mexicans. Where are the United mexican college funds??
But I'm Canadian. So I guess I don't really know the whole story...

When I was growing up, some forty years ago, all history, scholarships, media, etc. where white. Owned and controlled by white people and all about white people.

Then in the 70s, we started having things like Black History Month. Which meant that if I watched enough television, I'd learn about a black person other than Harriet Taubman and Booker T. Washington.

Nowadays, school history classes are a bit better, but there's still a long long way to go.

As for WET, ain't that just C&W?

Well I'm not sure what this question has to do with religion. I don't think you'd be sued for WET, but technically most of the stations on TV are mainly white....so WET would be kind of silly. (although I do see your point...kind of like why don't we have a white history month)

And you're talking about South Africa...that's not all of Africa.

If you truly think about it, you're already too late. There is MTV, CMT, VHI, and whatever other stations out there besides BET...all cater to the majority, with some 'alternative' programming. There are a handful of funds/resources dedicated to minorities with a few million dollars in them. The rest, with hundreds of millions, historically cater to the majority.
The only reason the programs you're speaking of attract a lot of attention is because they specifically highlight a particular minority group. Unfortunately, if a minority group has a terrible time establishing itself in a place and time, that group will usually continue to struggle in all facets of its existence. This issue is so deep on so many levels, I guess I should stop now before I bore you to death. Hopefully one day you'll get it.

I am always shocked that there are still people that have to ask questions like this. I am very glad you asked though and didn't just rant in a totally ignorant fashion the way a cab driver a I got did a few weeks ago. WOW! That was really horrible!

Look.. it's like this, you as a white person belong at this point in time, to the dominant paradigm her in North America. Even though you may be poor, you are still part of that whether you like it or not. There is the belief then that you still have a better chance of success than lets say a person of colour as an example, who is as poor as you.

The dominant paradigm in the case of North America dates back to colonialism and slavery. Hense, the decendents and or those associated by colour to slavery would tend to be victoms of that way of thinking even today and in the case of colonialism, First Nations people have and still are vistomized by that same mentality. Remember the cowboys and Indians crap and how all that has been such a part of the American identity?Come on! Wake up!

What are white people? I am a white woman. I cannot see any value in a white TV station!!!Come on! I do not identify with that image at all.

I am a Canadian with my own very specific lineage heritage, which by the way I am very cool with. Some of my lineage probably had dark skin, it shows in my family tree, so do blue eyes and blonde hair. Where does it come from? I don't know? Maybe the Picts, they were dark, or maybe one of the First Nations people that were sent over seas, or maybe a Jewish ancestor from the Middle East. The Celts passed through there on their way north again, spain too. ??????

As a women, you are in the next notch down from there, so am I. Although, I personally think that isn't such a ridged thing as it once was. Women tend to be at the bottom almost everywhere. The 'white woman' thing is slowly loosing it's grip as more men of colour gain stature in society. Women eventually will be at the bottom together. I know there are people that would disagree with that, but that's where I see us going.

Your example of white people from Africa, specifically South Africa is so rediculous. Read the book 'Ja No Man' written by author Richard Poplak! A must read in understanding this issue. He was a white South African that immegrated to Canada as a teen ager. Look under the Gill Deacon Show, March 27th, 2007, CBCtelevision for the interview, He even shaves his head, LOL!

You need more education. I mean this constructivly. You really do. More awareness.

It is hard for 'some' very successfull people of colour to understand why a white woman or man may not be successfull in North Amercian society. I have actually run into that. I struggle financially and as some one referred to me the other day..."You are like a star quarter back that has just been left to sit on the bench and never gets called up to play in the game...your like a treasure, somebody has to dig you up out of the sand, they have to!"LOL!

So I work hard and I keep trying. I cheer everyone on to be the best they can be!!!!!Even me!!!!!!

Peace.

PS I do not know of anything like thaat fund you mentioned in
Canada. We do address these issues but more broadly, through policies. It is working slowly.

OMG!!!Black History Month was developed by a Black American university professor that saw the 'abscence' of breadth in mainstream history (which empahisized 'white', your 'disgustingly generic' white history, and practically no one elses history at least not accurately)

That history was absent from the text books, that is why it was needed!!!!!!!!!GOD. I am a Canadain and I know that!

In Canda there are people working very hard to create inclusivity in our Cnadaian history books. It takes time and constant revision and research, constantly broadening the research and the perspective to do this but it is going to pay off. Awsome stuff. So we will not need things like Black History month. Do you understand?????

Good luck sweety.

Icarus, you are a dear. I think this one needs more practical stepping stones at this point hon, or she won't even try to cross the river let alone overcome her illussions.

If I had a dollar for every time this question was asked, I'd be rich!

Ok... a majority of the television channels are predominately white. They just don't call it WET. But, as far as BET is concerned... it is owned by Viacom. Same people who own damn near all cable stations and CBS. Rich white guys capitolizing off of hip hop culture. I don't even watch BET.
And, yes... there are white scholarships. Google it please. They're there. And, there are also scholarships for specific countries, and heritages. So, I'm sure they could find a South African scholarship. Do a little research please.

I'm not sure if this belongs on the R&S board but you do have a point. However, many Blacks believe (right or wrong) that they have been disenfranchised by the television industry.

W.E.T. has existed since the invention of television and movies. In fact W.E.T. is the secret behind the success of B.E.T. Without W.E.T.....B.E.T. would not be possible.

I totally agree with you. As white people if we started organizations like that we would be called racist. Why is that? Every other ethnic group has awards and schools just for them. Why don't we? I have no answers for you, but this is a great question.
