hard boil two hardboiled eggs, place in a blender or food processor,squeeze out 1 gel tablet of Vitamin E, a little canola oil, and 2 tbs of honey. Mix till very smooth. Place in a plastic container. Once a week put a little in the parakeets food tray. Parakeets love fruit, so give him some grapes now and then. Also there are seed treats that the birds love. You can get that in a pet store.

There are a lot of vegetables and fruits to give to your birds. It is not very good to give them a seed diet. Vet's prefer to give a peleted diet; seeds are just fillers. It's like eating ice cream and M & M's. But the greener the vegie, the more healtheir for the bird. The more colorful the fruit, the better. Just never feed it avacados and fruit seeds (especially apple seeds, they are poisonous!) But for treats you can give them seeds bars once in a while. There are these round treats called nutriberries which are also good.

The best diet for birds is a pelleted diet supplemented with fresh vegetables and occasionally fruit. Once you switch them to a healthier diet seeds become a great incentive because they taste so good. Try grated carrots and hang some parsley around the cage to get them to eat their veggies. Raisins are a favorite of my birds (they loooove sweet stuff) along with sunflower seeds once in a while. Also try eating in front of your birds or pretend to eat and make it look like whatever you have is really good. If you try it first they will copy you.

Other good stuff to try:

banana
orange
mango
small bits of boiled yam
well cooked eggs
pasta (whole wheat is better)
corn

Pretty much whatever you are having for dinner vegetable-wise accept for avocado, chocolate, cabbage, onions, garlic(in large amounts), rhubarb, anything with alcohol, anything with caffeine, iceburg lettuce (has barely any nutrition) and foods that are fatty or salty (fries etc.). Also try to go organic when buying for your birds. Stay away from produce with high pesticide residue like strawberries, bell peppers, peaches and a few others. You can find lists of what's good on-line. Just google or yahoo "pesticide fruits and vegetables" and go to some parrot web-sights for more ideas.

Mine LOVES raw broccoli, and he will always mooch a piece of carrot, banana, or apple. He'll also nibble at watermelon when I have it.

You may have to experiment with different fruits and veggies as each bird has its own tastes. In addition to what I mentioned above, budgies (parakeets) can have: grapes, guavas, kiwi fruit, mangoes, nectarines, oranges, peaches, pears, pomegranates, plums, strawberries, tangerines, celery, chard, peas, silverbeet, spinach, sweetcorn, watercress, and zucchini.

Some budgies will also eat chickweed, clover, and dandelion. I have had budgies that loved clover and others that turned their little beak up at it. My present budgie also likes to nibble on sprouted wheat grass (sold at pet stores and some supermarkets).

A spray of millet is also a great treat, and is lower in fat than the usual seed diets.

You asked so here you go...
Avicakes
pellets { a must }
Peas & corn
broccoli
apple { small pieces and NO apple seeds}
Try a little bit of everything, EXCEPT avacados ! A small piece of whole grain bread, toasted. Nuts, walnuts, almonds, sunflower seeds out of the shell but in small amounts, there very fattening, popcorn popped with no butter or salt, rice cakes..plain
Go for it and have fun.

YES!!!!!!!!! Your Parakeet should be eating more than seeds! My budgie LOVES fresh spinach and lettuce, and also eats fresh apple/pear/grape/whatever else I cut in a thin slice for him. Budgies SHOULD NOT HAVE oranges or avacado. Bluebonnet (my budgie) also helps himself to whatever appeals to him on my plate...noodles and bread/crackers and popcorn are also favorites. Eggs/cheese too.

I know that you can feed them some fruits like oranges, but make sure you check which fruits before you feed them cuz' some are bad or deadly for them. If you go to the Petco website they have animal care sheets, this could be helpful to you.

You can feed them pellets from the store, but I think they look yucky.

Most fruits are perfectly alright. I always wanted my bird to eat watermelon but he was too scared. Apples, oranges, most fruits. Just not kiwi.

My budgies love millett and baby spinach leaves.

Don't ever give a bird avocado to eat.
