I would recommend that you contact your local volunteer center. They can provide all sorts of one-time or short-term volunteer activities that match your interest and meet real community needs as well.
Through my volunteer center, I tutor children at the local library, enhance visitor experience at the local museum, package food at the local food bank, and a lot of other diverse projects.
Check out your local volunteer center through the following links:

The other option is to try the local chapter of the United Way. They also specialize in volunteer placement:

Good luck!

Check out these websites. They will give you a list of opportunities in your area that will work for you. Every organization needs someone to help with stuffing envelopes, getting donations, working special events, etc. Good luck and enjoy the time volunteering.

If you are interested in starting a charitable cause of your own, check out www.WorldVision.org. They specialize in helping people in developing countries to learn a new skill that would support their family, getting cattle and livestock for villages, buying children school supplies, etc. Request a catalog and check out the section on how to operate your own fundraiser to support WorldVision.
Also check out the Yellow Pages under Charities, Animal Shelters, Religious Organizations, Red Cross, Salvation Army, and Social Services. There are so many places that need people, even if it is only 1 afternoon a week!

You could check with some schools to see if they need volunteers for summer school help, animal shelters, preschool head start programs always need volunteers, hospitals and don't forget the veterans hospitals if any are near you either they always welcome visitors to talk and play cards with alot of patients, the salvation army might know of some other places that need volunteers, homeless shelters,if you know of a children's home with troubled kids then they might even be looking for help. Hope some of the ideas you find here help you.

How about an animal shelter. My son volunteers at one and just loves it. They are always in need of an extra hand. He does not have much contact with animals cause of only being 12yrs old but he does clean cages, mop floors, feed the animals, and he can also watch the Dr do surgery. I'm sure there are other duties involved.

I was a volunteer soccer coach at a city Parks and Recreation. You and your husband could be the coaches, because it's easier with two. If you like kids and want to get some exercise its a lot of fun!
