Theology is important. Spending time reading the Bible without support from anyone can become a problem. There is a lot to deal with in scripture for a believer. Going it alone is not as effective as having others for guidance, support, etc.

Spending time reading the Bible is a great way to develop a solid foundation, and it is full of life. Digging into difficult topics is important.

Reading the Bible and having fellowship with other believers are both important. Neither is required for salvation.

When I was about 16 or 18, I have practically finished reading the new testament. The life of Jesus was my favorite. In fact, I remember having a goose bump and tears in my eyes reading those words never heard before in my life. But something was amiss-ed. To cut long story short, I witnessed some glare difference between Jesus and what should practicing Christians be doing today especially those that are tasked to look after the flocks. It was very confusing at first, but then I have to accept there are some who really are wolves in sheep's clothing. The Bible, particularly the new testament helps me a lot to form a hypothesis on spirit and consequently pointing to the existence of God and the no-nonsense Resurrection and Ascension independently. So far, I am not affiliated to any religion but open to listen to what they have to say on current issues.

The principle purpose of religion is security, either by providing tools to control the uncontrollable elements of one's life, or at least explaining them so one can cope. Some of the task falls to God, some to the community or even the individual. The Bible is full of experiences that add up to "wisdom". Some of the passages are good examples, some are cautionary tales. Many Bible believers can't tell the difference, so they just pick and choose the parts they like, because essentially, people will do what they like to do. Having a Bible verse to back you up is very convenient, and even though the Bible as a whole has a viewpoint and a message, at some point it gets around to saying EVERYTHING, in or out of context. (It even says, "...There is no God.")

There are some conscientious believers who try to follow the spirit of the Bible rather than the letter, but they are always branded as the ones who are breaking the rules. Jesus was one such. He was branded as a Torah breaker by the religious authorities, whom he saw as technically observant but arrogant and oppressive in practice. It is unfortunate that his warning is lost on many of the "Christian" leaders of today.

I think some of us realized that what our churches were teaching wasn't quite "right", so they read the bible for themselves and followed what they felt it tells us to follow, instead of man made rules and regulations given us by our respective religions. I'm presbyterian, was raised that way, and it wasn't until I read the bible and did some research on my own that I discovered that Sunday isn't even the sabbath. I still go to church on Sunday, but I don't consider Sunday the sabbath. Other things like that, man made rules that don't always coincide with biblical teaching.

So basically, not going with any particular denomination is fine, they're all man made anyway.

I think you may be referring to those of us who do not take every single word of the Bible as a direct word from God. If that is the case, then you are talking about me so I will answer.

I believe in God and I try to serve Him as well as I can. However, my service to him is based on the core beliefs of Christians rather than on specific doctrine of any one denomination. I came to this through prayer and through listening to God for my answers. If I am sane (and I sometimes question that fact), then God has led me to believe that much of the Bible is written as the interpretation that the men of that day put on what God told them. In otherwords, putting words into his mouth. I may be guilty of doing the same thing and perhaps they were just as sincere as I am..I honestly do not know. But I have to live with my beliefs.....because I believe they come from God. A Christian needs to be more than just having faith in every word. They need to know the character of God and you can only learn that by having a one on one relationship with him. Every step I take, he walks with me. If I turn in the wrong direction, he sends me a gut instinct to move back. I can't explain it. I wish I could.

Religions divide people. Even Christians are divided from other Christians BECAUSE of religion. In my personal view I think it's wrong for people to be divided when it comes to having faith in something. (And yes, I mean you Atheists too. You know you BELIEVE in knowledge and truth). It is spirituality and knowledge of truth that UNITES us.

i simply realized that everything that God wanted us to know can be found in the writings of His prophets and apostles, and that everything else is unnecessary and often hindering man-made tradition that only distances a person from God.
