Personally I currently sleep about nine hours a night and still feel tired all day but this might be down to sleep apnea i think. But for someone who doesn't have that, is it possible to sleep 4 or 5 hours and feel reasonably fresh all day?

~ I'm not a doctor, but I'm sure age has a lot to do with it...

~ Activity is also a major factor...

~ I can still get by with 5-6 hours sleep a day, and often do... and I do need at least one day where I can sleep for 8-10 hours to 'try' to catch up... but we know you can't 'catch up' on lost sleep...

nope - the diet has to be great food - at least 5 fuits and veggies each day

and you have to exercise to get the metabolism up to speed

do you snore - are you overweight - is your waist bigger than your chest?

I had sleep apnea - in my first test had 376 episodes of 35+ seconds where I quit breathing in 8 hours
Oxygen content went to 77% ( they want it over 90%)
Never got below stage 2 sleep ( stage 4 is REM where you dream)

On the second night (week later) they put me on a CPAP (Continuous Positive Air Pressure) machine - and got the deviation down to 2 episodes per hour (5-7 is acceptable, under 5 is great!) WOW - what a difference!

so I go to sleep like a fighter pilot - and with the white noise of the machine - my wife is asleep before I am - but - BUT - there are nights that I sleep for 6 hours - and am TOTALLY REFRESHED! (sex is better!)

If these symptoms at the top are yours-----------
go have the study done - it may SAVE YOUR LIFE!

The body can survive on very little sleep, how well you feel is another story.
I'm in high school and I only sleep like 4 or 5 hours...between school, work, partying, hanging out with my friends and my boyfriend...there isn't much time for sleep. I manage. I never feel too bad, I'm not a morning person but at the end of the day I still feel fresh and ready to party! lol

And yes you can train yourself to sleep only 4 or 5 hours, your body and your "personal clock" needs time to adjust though..it may take awhile.
When I get back from summer vac. it usually takes me 2 weeks to adjust to the loss of sleep.

It is.. but only becuase everyone is different
Once you are getting under 6 a night you are doing damage to your body.. However it is possible that you can sleep too mcuh and that would make you tired.. Like when I got 9 hours a night I was exhausted but when I switched to 7 I felt much more awake.. Its just a personal number you have to find for yourself .. You can get by on too little for a while but eventually you will crash and you are putting strain on your organs and you are more liekly to get sick

It its not advisable , it may have a negative impact over longterm, but depends on the individual and age.
