First of all consider the fact that you are talking to the runaways. Yes, they could not hack it here and fled, taking the excuses you hear with them.
While it always helps to have a great resume and a degree, what will get you into the top firms is persistence and adaptability. I live and work in the LA area and have since I retired from the Army. I have had a great life here and have accomplished everything I ever wanted to do. I have a graduate degree, a nice home, drive a couple of great cars, and have a stable growth oriented economic base. All of these thing I got after coming here. with the right attitude you will do as well here as anywhere else in the US. So come on out!

You have to understand that for those of us who have lived in Los Angeles ALL of our lives, we have seen a lot of star struck tragedies. This includes seeing disappointed depressed actors, individuals trapped in poverty, and worse of all stuck in unsavory porn situations because they come Los Angeles seeking fame, fun and fortune.
What you presented in your questions did not include your impressive resume. So you sounded like a star struck tragedy in the making. So excuse me if I sound like Simon, if you want ot come to LA and spend between $2,000 to $5,000 for rent or a mortgage go right ahead.
This is not about being stuck up , it is an attempt to warn you that for the new guy in town you may find it extremely difficult. But if that is your dream go for it. There is a reason that we speak this way and a reason that so many people are streaming out of the state to Arizona and Texas. Frankly, I am concerned about how my children will make it in this overpriced state.
ps: You might get a more realistic picture of Los Angeles by coming here on vacation for a bit and having a recruitor or career counselor help you. Given your impressive credentials I am sure you already know that.

yup. that's LA. I was not born in LA, but I was pretty much raised there, so I thought that was just the way people are until I moved away. I was like "what? the world doesn't revolve around LA????" There are nice people in LA too, but it's hard to find. You must look really hard :) I still love LA and consider myself Angelena, but I am glad to be living in a small town now.

why do some LA people act this way?
Key word: *Some*
Los Angeles is very cosmopolitan. Unless you're becoming a model or a celebrity, most people aren't *that* harsh. There are stuck-up people in Louisville, Kentucky, New York City, Connecticut, France, anywhere.
So you've answered your question. Most people are not like that. *Some* people are.

Just wait until you get there and spend time there... Everyone has degrees there- it's just no big deal... Also, when you're there, only west coast schools count. Lastly, I don't know where you are moving from, but L.A. is unbelievably expensive- UNLESS you are moving from NY, Chicago or Boston- then it will seem about the same. It took me years to get accepted in L.A., but I finally did- and shortly thereafter, I left! Best decision I ever made.

That's not just LA. If you look at questions about anywhere in CA in here you will always see people talking about how expensive it is and this and that. Many of them don't live here or moved somewhere else cheaper. I think people exaggerate a lot about how expensive it is to live here. I was born and raised in Ca so maybe I am used to it, but I don't think it's that much more, if at all, than areas like New York, Boston, and Washington DC. Hawaii is more expensive for just basic things like groceries and such. Housing and gas are more expensive here than anywhere else and that's about it. CA isn't the wealthiest state in terms of per capita income so it can't be that expensive to live here. And the media always hypes up on the cost of living here.
Also keep in mind that many of the people that answer in here are not even 18; Yahoo Answers is full of 13 to 16 year olds that of course have no clue what they are talking about.
People here aren't that rich; most people here are house rich and cash poor. Meaning that a lot of people live in homes worth $500,000 or more but they couldn't afford that home if they were buying for the first time.
You won't just find those types of answers in LA, but any questions about living in SF or San Diego get the same responses; "it's sooo expensive here" or "housing is insane" and crap like that, and in my opinion SD isn't even that bad in terms of cost of living. NY and DC get the same type of responses too. Yeah it's not the cheapest state to live in but it's not that outrageous either. You don't necessarily need a degree to live here, you just need to be able to work hard. You can make it CA just as much as anywhere else if you just put forth the effort. If it was so impossible to live here then 35 million people wouldn't call it home.
The media just hypes up the cost of living here so much. You may not have quite as much disposable income compared to if you lived in Houston or Phoenix, but you also don't have to travel to see beautiful beaches, world class cities, amazing mountains, deserts, forests, ect... I live in San Diego and every year thousands of people from Arizona (we call em "Zonies") and Nevada travel out here to vacation b/c they have more disposable income b/c they pay less for housing. We pay more for housing but don't have to travel far for a nice vacation b/c we already live here.
A person with your degree, socioeconomic background, and resume can pretty much live anywhere you want to. So don't worry about what other people say about how expensive it is to live here. It's really not that bad and worth it in my opinion.

So you live in a better area, have a better degree, and a better resume than we lowly Californians. And you dare call us "stuck up". Boo hoo hoo. Poor little you, I guess I hurt your feelings. Report me (again).

You weren't the target audience...You have a wealthy background, a good education and resume..but
Every high school kid who had the lead in his high school play wants to go to Hollywood...It doesn't work. Those comments apply to them, especially when they are 18...

no, laz. that is not how most people are here.
maybe people in "the industry" are. but the majority of people in LA are not in the business. they are just average joe's like me that would welcome you here, unless you're in front of me in traffic.
those that bash come here with the same high hopes and ideals you have, and are soon disillusioned. we don't want the same to happen to you. we just want you to be forewarned.
