My dad's bird is 22 years old and looks healthy as can be. We have had two other cockatiel's that were babies when purchased and one lived to be 8 the other to be 7. Is 22 uncommon for such a bird?

Maybe I shouldn't mention to my dad that they live to be about 22 years... =/ He would be so heartbroken!

I have a 19 year old 'tiel right now. Average life span is 15-20 years, but that does not mean that they won't live longer with good care, which I'm sure your dad's bird is getting!

I have heard of them living up to 35 years with good care.

Based on my experience they live from 15- 20 years with good care and diet. If the birds eat nothing but seeds then they will live half their life span- if your lucky.

Based on my experience they seem to live an average of 17-22 yrs. I have had many and loved all of them. They out lived all the dogs and cats I have had. The one I have now I've had 15yr and she still to lays eggs even without a male in the cage.

Don't know about cockatiels but I once knew a man who had a cockatoo. Apparently he thrived on it, and the camp little sod lived for years.
