Before you have kids do you think our society would be better off if people had to have a license or degree before becoming a parent. And if they do not have one then they must either have it by the time the baby is born or put baby up for adoption?

I don't know about a degree.. I know some people with degrees, that never should have become parents. But a license, or classes.. Heck yes. The other day on the news, a women used her 2 week old baby as bat to hit her boyfriend... if it was a law you had to take classes or apply or something, things like that probably wouldn't happen so often. I don't think that a law like that would ever get passed, a government trying to control who has children runs along the lines of communism.

that might be a good idea but it would not work in the USA but i do think that people should have to take some type of parenting class before they become parents. i would kill to have a child but dont have one because of a disease i have that keeps me on high dose of medicine one day i might have one and pray to god that i do .but it really make me mad to see all these people with children an dont even want them and have the government end up raising them and that is not right because they didn't ask to come in this world so it should be some type of law that if u are going to have a child then u need to be stable in all ways as far as a place to stay and financial because some folk are just not ready for the responsibility

Instead of charging people for a child rearing or bearing license, perhaps we should require that anyone wanting to become a parent first spend 1 year as a foster parent. That would solve two problems. It would give any prospective parent the opportunity to experience parenting, and it would help out with the extreme shortage of foster parents

You really must be kidding?! If that's the case maybe we need a license for sex too??? I don't think that licensing to become a parent is such a great idea and would be in a total state of shock if something this bizzare ever happened.

Great idea, unfortunately it would never work. I do think that a mandatory class before you leave the hospital should be the minimum we, as a society, could be enforcing. The bottom line is that parents need to take it upon themselves to educate themselves. It is their responsibility and it is their child who will suffer from their negligence if they do not.
Of course, one can read every book ever written and listen to advice from every professional, unless they are willing to invest time into their child's life and upbringing it matters not at all.
It seems that many do not bother to learn about all the information available choosing to rely on their experience with their own parents as their only guide. I think it should be our goal to do better for every new generation. I do not think it benefits to repeat mistakes from the past, glossing them over with "my parents did that to me and I turned out all right in the end" perhaps true, but did we turn out ok because of these things or in spite of them.

Although you pose a very interesting question. Let's think about how the government already controls our lives. What would be the criteria for getting a license? Would you have to be from wealthy families? Would you have to be highly educated? Would you have to go to a government sponsered 'parent program' where they would teach you how to be politically correct with your soon to be child? Remember don't spank or yell at your children; you'll hurt their feelings.

I do think that abstinence and responsibility should be taught on the homefront well before a child enters their teenage years. I believe that setting a standard from the get - go with your children as to what is acceptable and what isn't does a world of good for them. By the time they hit years 14-19 they don't need to be stroked to spare feelings, they need to be hit with reality. Such as taking them to volunteer at homeless shelters, nursing homes, 'BigBrother/BigSister programs, inner-city projects...on and on. They see a world outside of their own and they become more aware of what their responsbilities are. They will be better people because of it.

I also believe that when God is in your home, your children listen, are responsible and are caring. Which they will carry on through to their children.

No licenses or degrees necessary. Just your own parenting guided through by God.

Do you honestly think people would do that?
All people have access to the Dr. Spock book but how many read it.
You kind of sound like the Chinese who sign a paper to only have 1 child the others are ether put on a door step ( mostly girls ) or unfortunately given a shot to kill them.
There are so many children now who need homes.
Heck why don't we just sterilize people until they are ready to have kids then reverse it when they go to get their degree!
People are going to have kids no matter what.
What kind of society do you live in?

The only problem with having to pass a test is that applicants can THINK they will act one way when in reality, they do the opposite.

Raising a child is a learning process in itself. Looking back on raising mine, before I had kids I would never have thought I would have done half of what I did and the way I did it.

No parent has a plan that is foolproof. You just have to keep your eyes and ears open and be ready to ADAPT!

a degree such as having gone to college and majored in something and graduated with a piece of paper saying they did it. Sure because we all know that the only people who molest or mistreat kids are the ones with only a high school or less of an education, all those people with pieces of paper and alot of money, they don;t do anything that could be harmful.

Elitist.

Well let's see where I live you need a licence to own a gun.

A fully licenced gun owner decided to pull his gun out and point it at a group of Hell's Angels wearing full colours. He's dead BTW.

How many people do you see driving cars that clearly do not understand what turn signals, stop signs, etc mean? And in theory they passed written test and a practical exam.

Licencing is just a cash grab.
