if one sins for the sake of shock value, then it is wicked, because it is against all good, without purpose. but one whom sins in private, with reason, cannot be punished, the sin becomes more of a rite of passage for the sinner, or at least a learning experience. when done in private, things take on a nobler sense, because it is not about fame or rumor, it is only about oneself.

The create a public scandal, or anything that effects other people, if wicked. Why? Because it doesn't just effect you. To sin in private in which it only hurts you is not a sin (in this person's opinion) because it doesn't effect anybody but you. It's not evil unto anyone else.

You do not say who said that, but I feel what was meant is: what we do in public can offend other people so we should act according to the laws of the society in which we live. What we do in private does not offend others (unless we have our drapes open, then it is not really "in private"), so it isn't wrong.

Actually what is right and wrong is all a matter of perspective, anyway. The important thing is to treat each other the way we would want to be treated.
