I've heard a few answers:
1) The Talmud or midrash says that the light of the first day was a spiritual type of light, which would give clarity to the righteous. God saw that there would be people who wouldn't deserve that light, however, so He hid it in the Torah, where only sufficiently righteous people would be able to access it. The sun and moon give off a physical light that anyone can use.
2) I saw another answer given by a rabbi who clearly was into physics. Unfortunately, I can't remember where I read it or who the rabbi was. What he said was that immediately after the Big Bang, everything was super-hot, and acting funny, and all the photons were trapped inside everything else. (Or something like that. It's really hard, quoting cosmophysics from memory when you have no idea what you're talking about). As the universe cooled, the light literally got separated from the darkness. Thus, day 1 would be talking about the creation of light itself, and day 4 would be the specific making of the sun and moon.
3) Another physics answer in in Gerald Schroeder's wonderful book, "The Science Of God". It seems that earth's atmosphere started out opaque. It became transparent around the time the Schroeder calculates corresponds to day 4. So the heavenly bodies would have been created on day 1, but only became visible on day 4.

Dear Truth,
When you read chapter 2 of Genesis, the Lord is giving you more detail about creation. God does not need to create a star to provide light. He created physical light out of nothing. Remember we are talking about God Almighty!
God created our sun and moon in order to provide a time clock for mankind. A day would be 24 hours and a month would be 29 days. This clock or time-keeping system is utilized throughout the Bible so that ALL the dates in the Bible are absolutely true. Creation occurred in 11,013 B.C. The world is, therefore, 13,019 years old.
I hope this helps you.

God divided light from darkness on the second day but He created the sun, moon & stars on the fourth day; He didn't redivide the light & darkness

I think this came from the world-view of the time. Light and darkness were considered seperate things, but so were the sun, moon, and stars. People didn't understand the source of light, so it made perfect sense to them to first clear up the mishmash of light and dark and then gather some of the light into the sun, moon, and stars.

In the first reference God may have been referring to the division of good and evil, when Lucifer and the angels who sided with him against God, were cast out of heaven. The second reference was in regards to actual light, that of the created universe (suns, planets, moons, etc.) as opposed to the void of empty space.

Actually, Genesis is saying that on day 2 light was created. On day 4 the light-bearers (stars, etc.) were created. What I'd like to know is how we have light without something to make the light. How can we have light without the stars or something to bring it into being?

The first light and darkness could represent good and evil
The second could represent actual light and darkness itself.
