If you eat too many Big Macs, you have made your choice, you may die, however you wont cause other peoples deaths, since there is no such thing as passive eating.
Clubs pubs and restaurants will be nicer and safer places for non-smoking customers and staff. None of whom want to inhale other peoples cigarettes and increase their own heart attack, lung cancer and COPD risk.

I have been in this industry for 10 years and see this as a massive opportunity. There are thousands of people, especially women who do not currently go to pubs and clubs because of the smoke situation. There will of course be winners and losers and I completely sympathise with those pubs and clubs that are unable to provide external or alfresco solutions to retain their smoking clients, but it is a price worth paying to save lives.
However...your argument is asinine. Equating an individual choosing to do himself harm by eating a McDonalds to a non smoking employee at a pub breathing in second hand smoke is not clever just ask Roy Castle...well maybe not.
As to how this is going to be policed, I read an article about the Irish ban which identified a racketeer, and a couple of ex IRA members sitting in a pub after hours who got up to go outside to have a cigarette because they believed it was the right thing to do.
Personally I think you need to do some serious growing up, but you can always get your own back and give me a thumbs down! PS I am a smoker.

There has been a smoking ban in effect where I live for over a year now and the bars do not seem to be effected at all. The smokers just have to get off their a$$es and go outside now. I love it. I hate coming home from a bar and smelling like an ashtray. If you work at McDonalds you can simply choose not to eat the food, but if you work in a bar and others are smoking, you cannot choose to quit breathing. Unless of course you want to die. I don't smoke, so I don't give a damn about your rights to smoke indoors. If it bugs you that much, vote against it and hope for the best.

the smoking ban wont affect pubs and clubs, here in ireland the ban hs been in for a few years and the pubs and clubs are doing the sme as if you could still smoke. Nobody is forceing anybody to smoke and places like mcdonalds arent stuffing burgers down overweight peoples mouths. Its there choice to keep eating them.

I'm a smoker but I hate going to pubs clubs or restaurants because the atmosphere is TOO smoky! I believe other people have rights and as a lot of cigarette smoke can increase the risks to others (No it won't kill you if you pass me in the street!) I think the ban is justifiable, but the paranoia about passive smoking isn't! Someone eating a burger from that particular place may annoy me but it wont kill me or add to my risk of dying of heart-disease either!

as the smoking ban picks up speed, more hard core smokers
are going to jump on the wagon (2 weeks for me) and little
by little, even the hard-core smokers of today are going to
want a smoke free environment in pubs and clubs. Currently,
I will attest (from experience) to the fact that a smoker likes
a smoke with a drink and a drink with a smoke and a smoke
with a drink etc. It's like trying to break the smoke with your
morning cup of coffee -- even with cold turkey it takes time
for the effect to been known -------- it's all a matter of time

I live in CA and that is the law here.........has been for a long time. CA does not allow smoking in pubs, bars, clubs, hospitals, airports, or any PUBLIC place. It seems to work well, actually. I live in VERY northern CA, some parts of CA may be different. So far, the law has not seemed to slow anyone from going out to their regular places. People just go outside and smoke.

i think the government is just taking stuff one step at a time ~~
they will ban mcD's in the future probably unless the current obesity decreases instead of rapidly increasing like it is now. its good that pubic smoking will be banned from july because it creates a foul stench in the air, and hopefully allow people to kick the habit. more people will probably go into pubs and clubs, and might be a bit strange at first, since people are soo accustomed to the smell of smoke when they first enter.

Don't forget that their are hundreds of thousands of people out there who currently DON'T go to pubs and clubs because of the foul stink and unhealthy air caused by selfish smokers.
These people will be able to return to the pubs they abandoned long ago. With any luck the smokers will be at home coughing their guts up.
