I don't know about legal, but it's true that many artists don't like to do them. Look in the artist's portfolios when you go in a shop - do they include pix of feet they have done? And, follow their skin care advice _exactly_.

My first tat was on my foot. It was the one tattoo I had ever really wanted. I argued with the guy I got to do it for about an hour before he did it - we argued about how it would look (I designed it myself) and where it would go exactly. I ended up having to get it touched up twice thereafter (I went to someone else for the touch-up - she does feet, she _listened_ to what I wanted and then told me what was and what wasn't possible, and it looks great. She does all my tats and my g/f's tats now.)

It isn't so much a question of foot tattoos being illegal or not, but more so whether or not the artist feels comfortable with tattooing them.

A lot of artists are uncomfortable or will refuse to tattoo the foot, hands, etc., because they are rather prominent areas of the body. The artist may feel you are not "prepared" to take on such a tattoo, or that you do not realize how this may or may not affect your lifestyle.

An artist may also refuse to tattoo these body parts because of the lack of "meat" there is to work with. Think about it - your foot is most likely somewhat boney, and the ink used in the process needs to be injected deep into the skin. This tattoo may suffer more wear and tear than other placements, can be quite painful, and may require more touch up than usual.

If you are deadset on having your feet tattooed, take a look around your town and start talking to artists about what they will and won't do. You won't know unless you ask!

They are illegal in Ohio, where tats are regulated by the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology. Some artists will still do them, though. It takes longer for foot and hand tats to heal, they are more susceptible to infect (given the location), and are much more easily damaged due to shoe wear, injuries, etc. A lot of artists don't want their work displayed on feet and hands because of the risk of damage, so they won't do it.

Why would it be illegal?

Its perfectly normal and common to get a tattoo on your foot. Some shops don't like to do feet tattoos because the tattoo can require a few touch ups and look bad over timing hurting the rep. of the studio and artist but its not illegal at all.

Since when did tattoos become the work of the devil? Give me a break.
I have a tattoo "ring" around my toe. The only thing the tattoo artist told me is that because of the high exposure to the sun in the warm months it might fade, which it has, but it's still COOL!

Foot tattoos are perfectly legal. I have four on one foot for the past three years now and it looks as good as the day I got it!

They are not illegal that I know of. Some places will not tattoo you there because the pigment dosen't hold well there and they do not want to give you a tattoo that will eventually look bad or ruin their reputation as an artist. It's the same with hands and fingers.

haha that's funny.

Don't go trying to put a tat on the BOTTOM of your foot btw.

Legal.

Why? Cause it's your foot silly.

They aren't illegal, just ill advised. Most tattooists won't do feet, hands or head unless they know the person really well. Those areas exfoliate very quickly so tend not to retain color and fade easily.
