I have always wanted to become a radiologist, but lately I have been looking toward the dental field and was wondering what is the chance of becoming an oral and maxillofacial radiologist. This would be the specialty that I would prefer due to it being very related to a medical doctor radiologist. I am thinking about the military to for after graduate school, and was wondering if they have any in this specialty. Thanks for all who answer (and I don't mind long detailed answers at all).

While the fields may sound similar they are really quite different. Medical radiologists spend their time reading many, many patient radiographs each day. They make a TON of money. $300,000 - 400,000+ if the numbers I have heard are to be believed.
Dental radiology is more of an academic specialty. Most dental radiologists will work in a school / research setting. There just isn't much need for their services clinically. The pay is going to be MUCH less than a medical radiologist for the same number of years in training... probably more like the salary of an engineer.
I love being a dentist; it is a fantastic career. But if you know you want to be a radiologist I think medical school is probably a better choice.

I have never had a specialist take my dental x-rays. It's always the dental assistant who does it (even when I had oral surgery).
I'm just not sure I see this as a needed specialty. You might be better off just sticking with the radiology career, and see what opportunities are out there for specialization.

Oral surgeon : More complex oral surgery . For checkup and cleaning , a generalist will do .
