Antibiotics - The most common antibiotic used for treating acne is tetracycline. It is used to kill the bacteria responsible for acne and also reduces inflammation. Antibiotic treatment may take several weeks or even months to be effective and must continue even after the acne has cleared up. A common side effect associated with oral acne treatments is increased sensitivity to sun light resulting in bad sunburns if the patient stays in the sun too long. Birth control pills are sometimes effective in treating acne in women. They change hormone levels in the body and can reduce the acne causing effects of testosterone. Zinc is a relatively new treatment that is effective in some cases.

As far as I knows, the oral medications belongs to the Systemic therapy. So far, there are some kinds of oral medications which are prescribed by the skin doctors, including:
1.oral antibiotics
2.oral retinoic acid (after taking, someone will have serious aftereffect. Therefore, please follow doctor's indication)
3. the hormonal pill ( the same as the former)

some docs prescribe oral contraceptives( the pill) as they can help acne in some cases

Do they still perscribe accutane? that was some hardcore medicine that made your acne way worse for like 3 weeks and then once you were done it was great...my acne has been fantastic since.
