Head lice are now very resistant to the standard therapies. They are still sensitive to some of the older, but slightly more toxic preparations like Benzyl Benzoate. Also they can be beaten by an efficient steel nit comb. I noted the other day that Sainsburys had an excellent one in stock. This also tells you there is both a need and a demand for them!

Instead of using chemical treatments (which lice become resistant to), delouse every third day for a fortnight. Use tons of normal (cheap) conditioner, comb it through with the nit comb then rinse out. The lice can't cling on whilst the hair is so greasy, and any left are too small to pass on and will be eliminated on the next round. Try plaiting her hair or putting it in a bun for school.
Insist the school gets a nit nurse in- given enough pressure they usually will. Knowing that one is coming to check everyones hair is usually enough to make the lazier parents sort out the kids who are keeping the problem going.

i know the problem too well i had to do my girls hair for 6 months solid,i tried everything from the chemist, tea tree oil in the shampoo, conditioner and comb, nit repellant sprays, olive oil,nit combing everyday it was a nightmare,i stopped them washing their hair every day ,their dad had them one weekend and used a flea spray without my consent apperently it is used abroad but not here and that killed them for a bit but they were soon crawling again ,i had their hair cut shorter but lice live off the scalp so it doesn't make a difference ,the last thing i used was hedrin/hedrim whatever it is called it's not chemical so it's safe to use and so far it has done the trick,i always tie their hair up and use hairspray and so far so good the last time i had to do their hair was about 4 months ago.

Have you treated your home? If not, then you need to wash everything you can in hot water. You also may need to treat your carpets for lice. Once you vacuum the carpet, make sure to throw the bag out. If something is not washable and has touched her head, you need to put it in a plastic bag, tie it tightly and leave it for at least one week. Also, have you seen your physician? She may need a prescription strength pediculocide. If she keeps getting the head lice, I am inclined to believe that there are some nits that you are missing when you comb it out, which can be easy to miss with long and/or thick hair.

My sisters kids have had the same problem and she has found the only solution is to do a full comb through with a nit comb every night.

Separate the hair into sections and comb from root to tip.
Even if you don't remove every egg the combing damages them so they don't hatch.

If you wash and condition the hair before and leave the conditioner in before combing it can help make the job easier.(wash it out when you've finished combing)
Be reassured it's not your fault and your not alone.

The only thing with long hair is that it's so much more time consuming to comb through. My sister did eventualy get her little girls hair cut, but just a bit.

We tried everything with our daughter who seemed to get it everyweek from school and once again they came back. we spent lots of money and felt really bad for her but finaly we tried the new lyclear spray, not the old one and we got rid.
One thing is to do all the family not just the kids. My son had a shaved head and no hair but he had them which we thought was imposible and we never checked.
Good luck

Treat your home but the best & cheapest treatment is mayonaise. Smother the hair, leave it on for about 30 minutes. Rinse, Thick conditioner & comb with a nit comb. The mayo smothers the nits. When you have rinsed off the hair will be silkie & smooth. I think its the eggs & oil that makes the hair nice. Also there is no nasty chemicles or smells. Its cheap & you can use it as many times as you want with no nasty side affects. I have tried this many times on my grandaughter & it really works.

my niece had a recurring problem with these little critters, you need to buy Hedrin from the chemist, you put it on over night and it kills the lice and their eggs, you still need to comb through the morning after and give her an old pillow case when you use it ,its 'MAGIC' in a bottle, its the only one i know of that really works. when i was at school we never had the epidemics we get these days because the 'nit nurse' who used to come on a regular basis and if we were found to have them we would be sent home until we were clear, these days we dont have nit nurse because its apparently an invasion of privacy, schools should bring them back in, i would do it voluntarily
