I have an appointment tomorrow to have a Mirena(IUD) inserted. I was wondering if anybody else has had this, and how did it work? Did you have any side effects? Did it hurt when it was inserted? I thank you for your answers ahead of time.

Slight cramping when it's inserted. Most people love it and have no problems at all. In fact, most women has decreased flow and cramps w/ their period or no period at all. There is a slight risk of infection among other problems. I was one of the unfortunate ones. I had it removed after the infection it gave me and am worried now that it damaged my tubes and I may have problems conceiving.

I have a Paragard, not a Mirena, but some of the same things will apply:

You are going to be crampy after the insertion. The insertion also pinches a bit, kind of like an extended pap smear. Take some Aleve (you can take some before the appointment) and get some of those Therma-rest heating pads. They help SOOO much. No sex or tampons for a certain amount of time - your doc will tell you. You might want to have your doc leave the strings relatively long - they can always trim them again, but they curl up and aren't as pointy after a while, as opposed to shorter strings, which can kind of poke.

As for Mirena effects, I know some women get very, very light to zero periods when they have it in. But you should still check your strings monthly, even if you stop getting periods.

Ok i had one inserted after i had my baby and while it really didn't hurt to have it put in i still didn't like this form of birth control. I skipped periods erraticlly and had constant cramping when i wasn't expecting my period. I had it taken out about six months after i had it put in. Now my mother has the paragaurd and she loves it and would never dream of having it removed the only thing that she says is different is that she has heavier periods but doesn't have any cramping. The side effects of the IUD are a slight chance of it poking threw the uterus during insertion, a chance of an infection known as PID, also since it doesn't stop you from producing eggs like the pill does you have a slight chance for a tubal pregnancy. These risks are very slight and are just as likely as the side effects from the pill. Remember that every person is different so it is really how YOUR body will react to it. Good luck=)

I've had it for nearly 2 years now and love it!!! I have gotten pregnant on the patch and the nuva ring so I was really paranoid about birth control after I gave birth to my youngest. I've heard people say they feel slight pressure when it is inserted but I felt none. I had mine inserted at my 6 week check-up and was kind of numb from pain meds...lol. You may bleed for a month or even 2 after getting the mirena, but it's worth it. Eventually your periods will become lighter, shorter and may even stop altogether. Good luck tomorrow!!!
