i just joined yesterday, and was very surprised to see the number of self-purported atheists hanging out in religious and spirituality chat. doesn't that seem contradictory to you?
perhaps it would be different if they really wanted to learn something, but from what i have seen. what they often share is belligerent, sarcastic, and filled with resentment.
why do you think the self-purpotrted non-believers come here?

I consider myself a spiritual atheist and a secular humanist. Also religion fascinates me to no end...not because I feel the need for a "god" in my life...I just like seeing how different people react differently to religion. Also this is a free forum. Anyone of any and all beliefs are free to ask and answer questions. Since you are new I will cut you some slack. But next time you ask a question you really should search and see just how many times it gets asked. This is like the 500th time this question has been asked.

Part of the reason is because there is no Atheist category (at least that I could see) but the biggest reason I and many other 'lurk' here is because we enjoy sharing the "good news". Now that the yoke of christianity has been removed we want everyone else to know that there is life after the brainwashing wears off.
As far as being belligerent, sarcastic and filled with resentment: I suspect that many of these people had the same characteristics back when they used to sit in church.

I'm a non-believer and I come here because I've suffered through a long life-time of self-righteous ignorant Christian bigotry. Here in Answers R&S forum I can speak my mind without fear. For decades I have been terrified that some ignorant Christian bigot would burn a cross on my lawn, or split my skull with an axe handle, or cut me up into pieces and bury me in a drum full of diesel oil. Now I can say what I truly think about Christianity's superstitious bigotry and live to see tomorrow. Pay-backs. That's why I'm here.

Because we have spiritual views, just not YOUR spiritual views. Many of us are also educated in world religions. We have ideas to share too.
Also besides being an atheist I'm also a pagan and a Taoist, so I actually often have quite a bit to say.
And from the behaviors of Christians I see on here, they have an awful lot to learn themselves. What they often share is belligerent, cruel, and filled with arrogance and ignorance.

"what they often share is belligerent, sarcastic, and filled with resentment."
I guess you didn't see any Christians doing that same exact thing.
Who says that Atheists can't be in here? We are allowed to come in and still discuss god. We do understand that concept of god, and we understand religion. We just don't believe in god.
**I am being serious. Actually I only saw one maybe two answers that weren't serious. Aren't the other ones good enough for you?

For fun, for information, and to prevent certain other world views getting a free ride, as though they were the only ones in existence.
Why contradictory anyway? If you cannot conceive of an atheistic spirituality, then indeed there are more things in heaven and earth than dreamt of in your philosophy.

It's my "religion" if that's what you want to call it...called atheism.. self purported non believers..hmm, that's sounds very righteous of you to think that way.
I'm not filled with resentment.. I give you credit for believing in such a obscure and elusive God you have never seen.

We must stay ever prudent in paying attention to religious beliefs. It is necessary to ensure that they do not cross over into our schools, laws and government. It is our patriotic duty to care about religion.
Added: Why sarcastic? It's how I am. I'm that way in real life so I'm bound to be that way here. And sometimes what might look sarcastic is a joke because I also make jokes a lot in my offline life. And well, other times, things are just BEGGING for sarcasm so I must oblige. :o)

this question has been asked several times, btw.
i am a spiritual neopagan pantheist atheist... so i have beliefs. those atheists you speak of are in the minority, the rest you would probably not even recognize as such, as we are here to learn & share beleifs.

You're new so I'll be patient, why do you assume that every non-believer is an atheist, there are plenty of people of many different faiths here. As for the atheists, they are fun, amusing and here for a good time. Why are you threatened by them? I welcome them.
