Check out hslda.org for your state's requirements.
Independent study means you take a class or two on your own (make-up work or just a class you would enjoy). It doesn't look bad on a college application, but if you want a high school diploma, you will need to do more than independent study.
I would recommend the American School of Correspondence if you are looking for a curriculum. I went through them for the last two years of high school, and I only needed 4.5 credits (I had taken a lot in public high school). Their curriculum was very good. They are accredited. You get a high school diploma. I was even accepted to college (although as of yet I have not gone yet).

The most critical requirement is a parent willing and able to homeschool you. Independant study will look great on your application if you have a notable achievement to point to - such as winning a national level academic competition, or perfect scores on the college boards, or winning a National Merit Scholarship. Outside of that, it may just look like you goofed off.

You should check the laws in your state/district. I homeschooled my children for a few years and I checked with the registrar of the university they want to attend. If you have a college in mind, check and see what the requirements are and talk with the registrar to see how they feel about homeschool students and what type of extras you may need in lieu of graduating from an accredited high school.

Good luck

Maybe you should check out an extended study program. I know for a fact that University of Texas and Texas Tech both offer these types of programs, but I think there are others.
Here's the link to the UT website:

It has lots of information on the programs.
