I usually pick the shoe up first and make sure that it is light weight. I also look for a shoe that has removable insoles. Make sure that you have a little room past your big toe. I also like when the shoe is snug on the sides. I usually buy New Balance sneakers because I find them the most comfortable all around. They have removable insoles, and I usually buy $20 insoles to go with my shoes. You also might want to try orthonic insoles. They are custom made to fit your feet, and you can put them in sneakers with removable insoles. I had to get these for my son who had some foot problems.

One of the main things my walker friend told me when I was looking to purchase a walking sneaker, besides a generally good fit, was to make sure the shoes didn't slip up and down (even slightly) at the back of my heel when I walked in them.

make sure the sneaker has a supportive arch in it. shoes that are flat inside causes that feeling that your foot is ripping in the arch. a good shoe store is the shoe tree if you have one. They have people who will find a shoe that's right for your foot.

a flexible sole and the shoe must really feel supportive. must feel comfortable right away... I ended up buying nikes for about 100 dollars and then it finally was okay.. no more pain in my knees, ankles, back or feet... that's what the right shoes can do... :)
