The modern sport comes from rules made by the Marquis of Queensbury. Before that prizefighting was brutal with no going to a neutral corner and bare knuckles used not gloves.

It has been around since 600 BC. It was in some of the first olympics. At first they just wore leather wraps around the hands then evntually they added spikes.
Boxing has probably been around as long as sport itself although as someone mentioned the rules were alot different.

No one really knows for sure, but the ancient greeks and romans had boxing matches, the bare knuckle type.
