Syncope is the fancy doctor's term for passing out. The valsalva maneuver increases the pressure inside your chest. This can collapse the big veins returning blood from your body back to your heart. If your heart isn't getting any blood, it can't send oxygenated blood to your brain. When your brain is deprived of oxygen, you pass out. In a healty person, passing out will cause you to stop holding the pressure and blood will flow to your heart. If you have diseased blood vessels that are less flexible, they don't bounce back to being open as easily. In those circumstances, holding the valsalva maneuver can be dangerous and potentially fatal.

RE:
Why does holding the valsalva maneuver cause syncope?

My understanding is that a Valsalva maneuver is the stimulation by pressure or rubbing of the carotid sinus. This causes the blood pressure (all over the body) to drop temporarily, I believe by reflex. If the blood pressure drops enough, then too little blood is getting to the brain and you faint (syncope).

Correction, pushes blood away from the heart, causing lack of oxygenation to the brain , thus syncope...Good Luck...

basically, it creates an unhealthy increase in the thoracic pressure which adversely affects the heart's ability to function efficiently to deliver the blood throughout the body by exerting pressure to exhale against a closed glottis. it can cause fainting and, in rare circumstances, death.

this should answer more of your questions.

hope this helps.
