We took her to the vet, and he examined her from head to toe and said it was a seizure but she is fine now, he said it could have been a one time thing, and didn't give any meds or anything and said she is in perfect health. How can a dog in perfect health just have a seizure for no reason. I am a little worried, but he said she's ok. Has anyone heard of this before??

It's important that you keep a journal noting time of day, time last fed, pets activities at the time of the seizure. If there are other seizures keeping these notes may help in determining cause. Epilepsy is diagnosed in dogs only after eliminating all other possible causes. Hopefully, this was a one time thing for your dog. If there are more seizures and your dog is diagnosed as epileptic there are meds that can control the seizures. Good luck!

When I was in high school, I had a dog that had a seizure. Like you, I was scared and worried and took her to the vet and he said she was fine. The difference: my dog began to have more frequent seizures. She ended up having epilepsy. If your vet says your dog is okay, maybe she really is and it was just a reaction to something she ate, drank, or maybe something bit her. If she has more, get her to the vet and ask about disorders like epilepsy. I hope she's perfectly healthy and it really was a one time thing.

Yes, I've heard of this. My parents own a dog who was having seizures. They learned that it was caused by stresses (ie, when they'd leave for a trip) and eventually found out that the seizures increased when my dad would spray the lawn with insecticides or herbicides. They alleviated the seizures by taking the dog for more walks, cutting back on the spraying (or keeping the dog out of the lawn for a period of time after spraying) and getting another dog as a playmate. He is doing just fine now.

We had a dog that had a seizure and it was a really long time (several months) before she had another. We took her to the vet and found out she had an infection and her white blood cell count was so high that with her age she wouldn't survive a surgery. We had to put her down. Did your vet check for an infection? It couldn't hurt anything if he checks. Take care.

Nerve disorders like that are weird--it's entirely possible that it could have been a one time thing. If it happens again, take the dog back and you can get a prescription for phenobarbital or something. The vet probably didn't want to burden you with the expense of epilepsy treatment if he wasn't sure yet that that was the problem.

its not at all common for dogs to have seizures, iam surprised that the vet did not do any blood work to rule out any other causes besides epilepsy. some dog never experience them again and if they do the vet can put him on some anti-seizure meds

My Shepard had the exact same thing..... Same story from the vet...... she was young around a year ..... had a couple more over a period of 4 yrs. She out grew them. Just be there for her when it happens calm her down, talk to her and comfort her. You didn't mention how long or how severe they were???? Its probably harder for you....just stay calm. That Will reassure her things will be ok.

Well you can get a second opinion. Did he offer an opinion on what may have caused it and why it may be a one time thing?
