To echo Nicklaus - master the power slide. Shift your weight to either your toes or heels (depending upon frontside or backside) and push the back of your board around. You will then slide sideways on all four wheels (or 180 around to fakie). Easier to do on harder wheels, definitely much better looking and useful than taking your foot off the board or grinding down the tail. Watch "Animal Chin" for proper application.

LOL don't ever use the back of your board to stop you just look stupid and you ruin the board. The easiest is just putting the foot you usually kick without to stop. Sometimes when I get going to fast I just jump off, but thats if I'm being dumb going down big hills witch a skate board isnt made for!

There are two basic ways, and both take some practice.
1 with your weight shifted toward the food at the trailing end of the board, step off backwards. This works well at low speeds.
2 At higher speeds, trun sharlpy so the board skids sideways. (This will grind the wheels down a bit )

I would say either to put your foot down to the pavement to the right or the left. Or to place your back foot towards the back lip of the board.
