FIRST dial the phone number without dialing the EXTENTION number.
then you will be notified about your successful access/dialing of the phone number.
after that u can dial the EXTENTION number

You dial the first part, wait until the system picks up, then dial the extension! Some phones you program even will let you store the entire number, and prompt you after making the call when you should dial the extension.

u call the number, u get a recording, that says if u know your parties extension dial it now, u dont dial it with the number thats just silly

Dial as usual and when it connects it will ask you if you know the extension or an automated system will ask you to punch in the extension #.

Normally, maybe always, a switchboard will answer and tell you "If you know your party's extension, please dial it not."
