I have a 7-mnth old, fixed male cat. he was the best cat ever untill 2 weeks ago. in the past, as soon as i turned off the lights and went into bed, he would knoe it was bedtime and fall right asleep with me, sleeping thru the night. Now, its like as soon as i turn off the lights he gets this energy spurt, and darts around my room looking for anything and everything to play with, runs around, scavenges for food, etc. as soon as i take whatever he is playing with away, he finds another thing to play with within a minute. when i've had enough of of his noise and can't fall asleep, i'll kick him out of my room, but then he cries so much that i have to let him in bc i can't sleep bc of THAT, then the whole cycle repeats itself. I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but I am gone from 8-6 everyday.. anyways, please help bc I havent goten a good nites sleep since this happened!

ps: the goal is to have him sleep in my room (i prefer it) but actually sleep - not play and get hyper when the lights go out.

If it's not a big deal, leave your bedroom door open at night, so he can come and go as he pleases. That way, when he has one of his "spells" he can run out of your room and around the house. When he gets it out of his system, he can easily go right back to bed with you.

It most likely has nothing to do with you being gone during the day if that's the way things have been from the beginning. Part of it is probably spring fever, along with him just being a cat. I haven't had a cat yet that doesn't run through the house like a chicken with it's head cut off in the middle of the night at least once in a while. Eventually, your cat should do this less often and you'll get used to it enough that it won't bother you.

Like the cute little kitten poster says.... Hang in there!!

Sounds like he's a bit lonely and doing all his sleeping when you are away:) Make sure to have items for him to play with when you are away. Also, when you come home spend time playing hard with him. My cats enjoy playing chase down my hallway a few times. Fetch is good, or tissue paper that they can hide under then attack. they love the sound and will run through the paper chase it or anything that moves under it. If you get him started when you get home he may continue for a bit and get tired. You could even get a harness and take him for an evening walk if you have a safe area. My oldest still gets excited when he sees his harness. Just like a dog. Try doing a little routine with him before getting into bed that will relax him. Brushing or petting him to help him understand it's time to calm down. Once I got my two boys in a routine they will actually go to bed without me when it's time. Use the play time and the calm down time to bond with the cat. you could get a 2nd cat to keep him company and help him use up his energy. Now is a great time to save a cat from the local shelter. If none of that works after a week or so then you may have to resort to leaving him out of the bedroom until he learns that bed time is not play time.

I know how you feel and can sympathise. Try playing with him for about twenty minutes, get a laser pointer and really make him run around. Once he has calmed down and hopefully used up a lot of his energy, give him some food. He will be tired and have a fully belly. Cats are more likely to sleep after a meal. I hope you can get some decent sleep!! It works for my two males.

Keep taking him our of the room, and leave lots of toys, even simple things like cardboard boxes, for him to play, Yes, he will cry and you will lose some sleep, but eventually he will get the idea. Also, play a lot with him when you arrive home, so he will be a little tired when you go to sleep.
Cats are night creatures, specially male cats, but he will learn to play by himself. Good luck!

I don't want this to sound cruel or anything but, I would buy a carrier cage and put him in that and then put him somewhere in the house where you do not hear him fuss about it. Just until he gets the message that you are the boss and you say it is time to go to bed. Just make sure that you remember to let him out as soon as you wake up so, he will be on your schedule.
