It's really just about what you are comfortable with. I was at the opera last weekend and I saw people in jeans and t shirts. Things have gotten so casual that there are no longer dress codes for the theater.

I live in NYC and when I go to a Broadway or off-Broadway show, I dress casually, like in jeans and a nice shirt. It's not necessary to dress up. Plus, the shows are usually 2 hours or longer so you want to be comfortable.

I went to see The Producers on Broadway in October last year. We went smart casual. You can get away with anything you want to but it is nice to dress up. I wore a nice skirt and boots and nice makeup and jewelry. You dont need to wear a full length dress (As nice as it might be). Just go and be yourself and enjoy the evening. xx

Business casual is OK, although some people show up dressed like slobs. If you're going to a nice restaurant later, you might want to dress up a bit, but even then, business casual is fine. Once you're seated at a show, nobody really notices what you're wearing, anyway.

nothing TOO fancy. the same clothes that you would wear to go to a nice dinner. if the weather is nice you can wear a skirt with a nice shirt. if the weather is cold, you can wear nice pants/heels/and a nice shirt and/or jacket with it. jeans and sneakers would be too casual, but a dress would be too fancy. if it's off broadway then you really can wear casual clothes and be fine. hope this helps. enjoy the show. this was my first answer posting!

i have seen people in jeans and t-shirt (as i was, becuase they lost our luggage at the airport) but when i went to the show the next night when we got out luggage back i wore black dress pants, a dressy shirt, and cute flats. i wore my hair up in a bun and had cute earrings on. i saw some girls together wearing long dresses they might wear to a dance and they looked goofy. go for semi-formal, because its fun to dress up for a fun occasion like going to a show! have fun!!!!

Dress nice. Go formal or semi-formal. The tickets cost enough, you might as well look like you can afford them. Sure sure, some people will show up in jeans and t-shirts, but you're not them. You've got class....
