I understand that as a host, you should go out on a limb for them, but where do you draw the line?

As a guest the person staying with you should make every effort to make sure that they are not making things difficult for the person kind enough to allow them to stay in their home.

They should definitely clean up after themselves afterall you are functioning as their host (ess) not their mother. The houseguests should "clean as you go" as they say.

Good luck with the situation.

Hmm, I think it would depend on who the visitor was, but I wouldn't have them back, that's for sure.

And I agree, as a host you should go out of your way to make them comfortable but how horribly rude of THEM to take advantage of your hospitality!

I think depending on the dynamics of your relationship with that person. Maybe while they're in the room where they left their mess you could go in and say, "Can you help me pick up a little bit?" or "Could you hand me those dishes (or towels or whatever), I better wash them now before they pile up."

And the next time they want to use your place as a hotel tell them "No Vacancy!" ;)

It's reasonable to expect a guest to pick up after themselves. Guests should keep dirty clothes off the floor and return dirty dishes at least to the sink. Guests should also rinse out the tub or shower after using and if they drop blobs of toothpaste in the sink should wipe that up....that is...unless you charged them for maid services!

It's not unreasonable. You shouldn't even have to ask. You're nobodies slave. If they live like pigs in their own house, they shouldn't make yours a sty too. Tell them to shape up or get the steppin'!!
Going out on a limb is one thing- being their slave is another.

Good Luck

They should have the respect and consideration to clean up after themselves unless the host has said otherwise -- tell them that one of the conditions of staying with you is that they have to clean up their own mess!

It is not unreasonable to expect them to not put you to more work and inconvenience than their stay has already caused you. A guest's duty is to bend over backwards to be as helpful and considerate as possible.

I'm a firm believer that whoever makes the mess should clean up the mess. Whenever I go to someone elses place, I always make sure that I leave things exactly the way I found them. If I make a mess, I will clean it up no questions asked.

I draw the line when it comes to shared areas of the house (ie living room). They need to pick up after themselves in the shared areas and I will ask them to do so if they don't on their own.

They can do want they want in their bedroom and personal bathroom (if there is one).

You shouldnt even have to ask...
As a guest, one should take it upon themself not to be a slob, and not to burden their host with extra work.
