The DMV will not allow me to renew my license as I do not yet have a social security number...I have had an IN drivers license now for about 9 years........so I thought it would be straightforward....... but I now have no valid picture ID.........sorry if this is confusing.....I can ask for another appointment with the USCIS if I have an emergency....but if I fail to appear for the appointment my application will be considered abandoned......I have no idea how and when I will be able to get a picture ID...I asked for just an Indiana identification card and the DMV are telling me without a valid SS number I cannot get one......I contacted social security and they do not issue social security numbers for the purpose of state ID cards and or drivers licenses......any advice on what I should do.....

Yikes! The DMV can be buttholes at time. I get calls several times a day from people desperate to renew their license, without any proof of ID. Generally you are permitted to show the DMV your receipt notice for your pending application for adjustment of status. If they do not accept it, however, is where the problem comes into play... Unfortunately USCIS cannot legally issue a document stating that you are here legally, etc etc.

But, as the above user stated, you are entitled to work authorization as far as I know. As long as your 360 is still valid, then you should be able to obtain a social security number for 'work purposes'. Just contact the social security administration once again and explain to them that you are entitled to a social security number. If they say that your status isn't updated in the system, or doesn't show, schedule an appointment with the local office to go in and update the status in their system, and they should be able to correct things.

Also, please know, that... Although the biometrics are a necessary thing in order to receive your immigration benefit, if an emergency ever arises and you are unable to attend the appointment, you can actually attend on any Wednesday after the appointment so long as you have the notice and a form of ID with you (which could pose a problem!). Those days are reserved specifically for people who need 'makeup' appointments.

If you have your passport, or anything else with you that states your ID.. Or even your receipt notice.. Take it with you on Saturday. Bring everything you can in order to make up for the missing driver's license.

I hope everything works out for you, if you have any questions or concerns please contact USCIS' Customer Service Line.

Sounds as though you're illegally in the country. If that's the case, you're not entitled to a drivers license or any other valid form of identification in this country.

EDIT....

I stand corrected. Under the I-360, its my understanding that you are able to work, correct? If that's the case, you are most definitely entitled to a SS#, and should have one already. There should be a box to check when you apply for the #. Outside of that, you'd really need to contact an immigration attorney.

Since you are legally here and have been given permission to work or a work permit, then the Social Security office should be able to issue you w/ a SS# and you can take that to the DMV.

When you apply for the SS# ask them for a letter to take to the DMV so that when you are waiting for it, you can have the DMV processing your paper work for the ID.

Hope this helps.
