My parents are getting microchips injected into my dogs as a result of some new law in NM. Do these microchips pose any threat to my dogs health? Even if there is not substantial evidence, I would really like to know about it.

Thank you

I had an exotic animal farm, and the animals were microchipped. There were no health issues related to the chipping. ALL thoroughbred horses must be micro chipped.
The worst that happens is that the chip moves down from where it was placed..If placed properly, it isn't likely to move, but it happens. Doesn't cause any harm, but just harder to find when its time to scan.
All police K9's and guide dogs for the blind are chipped. If there was risk, they wouldn't put these dogs in harm's way.

I'm a vet tech and I think the microchip is great. It is put in like a shot, under the skin and with a reader the number on it can be read. There is a registry that you sign up for with your name, emergency numbers, any medical conditions your dog has etc. The reason I think it is so great is many animal are now allowed to travel with their owners to countries that didn't allow them to before. Since you can actually track an animal, you can track there rabies vaccination and medical history, as well, of course as whom the animal belongs to in case he gets lost. Because of this, countries before who had no rabies were very reluctant to have any animals that could carry rabies come into there country. Most had very long quarantine times and even them they made it very difficult to have that pet in it home in another country. Now, because of the microchip, most countries have made the whole process much easier and much shorter. Don't worry, it won't affect the health of your animal at all.

I think I've microchiped hundreds of pets....

the only and "worst" complication I've seen was in a crazy german shorthair dog, where he was fighting aggressively when being implanted and the needle moved a little. He had a slightly swollen lump between his shoulder blades that healed nicely on his own. This was due to the needle nicking a small vessel bc he was so feisty and a blood clot forming between the skin and the tissue underneath. But this was an isolated case in an exceedingly crazy dog.

The benefits are great in case your pet ever gets lost. I highly recommend it.

No complications at all. The chip may migrate from between the shoulders to another area but even this is rare and not a health threat as the chip lays just under the skin.

Ihave heard things but we do it to every pet that comes through our program. My 14 year old daughter injects any of them that we foster and we have never had a problem.

My own pets have had microchips for a about 4 years and we have no problems. Occasionally I will scan them and dance around and tell them thats their number. They think mommy's a dork.

My rat terrier has had one for almost a year now and there have been no problems(he is almost 2). The vet should be able to tell them if there are any...that is if it is a good vet they are going to!
