If you are looking for a new companion, your first indication of good health is bright, expressive eyes. Not watery or cloudy, nor with matter in them, or turning away from you, but bright inquisitive eyes, that will look right at you as if trying read your thoughts.
Second, if puppy has a big pot belly, he likely needs to be de-wormed..No biggy there..however, if he needs de-wormed, then he likely has not had other proper care. The breeder who does not de-worm also does not feed quality food, or have vaccinations done. So, your chances are greater of the pup being unhealthy or catching deadly disease.
You also want him to have a soft coat. One with a rough coat has net been cared for, lacking good food, or having parasites.
You don't want the excessivley shy puppy, but one that responds to you..You will also not want the one that plays too rough and bullies the others, if there is a litter..
the very best indication of what the puppy will be like is to meet its parents..If the parents are just what you want in a dog, the puppy will likely be very much like one of them.

1. Watch how the puppy behaves on his "home turf". Outgoing and friendly (good)? Shy and prone to scuttling away (not so good)? How about his littermates? His mother?
2. Talk to the breeder. Have they tested the parents for Von Willbrands Disease (a bloodclotting disorder known in the breed)? History in the bloodlines of spinal/disc problems? What other genetic testing have they done?
3. Is the environment in which the puppy was raised clean? Do the dogs appear healthy?
Not sure if by "something" you mean physical or developmental/behavioral, but the answers to the above will help you out either way.

Look the dog over really well are there any marks hot spots, fleas does it limp or whine alot. Do you like it's personality after spending time with it? Is it potty trined? Has it ever bit anyone? These are a few things to think about. Take it to the vet if you decide to get it, for a check-up to put your mind at ease.

standards are much less trouble-free by way of fact right this moment style seems to be a "mini" form of international. i like my standards and my minis...they're the superb canines contained in the international. i offered my many times used from a community puppy save. i'd advise the puppy save or look contained in the paper. you may discover one contained in the classifieds or on the pound. sturdy success!

Personality. If the dog you have now is biting, scratching, growling when you approach, that dog is NOT for you. You should be able to tell the difference. It also depends on what kind of personality you WANT your dog to have.
