I said the last part wrong. I dont think church people support death, but i do think some are so in a hurry for armageddon that they will try to acheive this any way they can.

Violence is the last resort of the wise and the first resort of the fool.

Instead of asking atheists if they think that church people are supporters of war, why don't you ask a person of God. I love and serve God and I can assure you that the killing of innocent people is not acceptable. However, defending ourselves against those that attack us is not only acceptable it is necessary to prevent them from doing it again. Does that make me a war monger? I hardly think so. As as far as us trying to hurry armageddon, that is utter nonsense. Every Christian knows that God will do things in HIS TIME not in ours. We could develop the worst weapon imaginable but we would have zero impact on the time of armageddon. Stop trying to blame Christians or other religious people for all the woes of the world. I'm not saying that we have not had a role in some very bad things in the past but lets be realistic....people who believe in God are not the problem.

I don't "agree" with war. I find it to be frequently stupid and shortsighted. We'll never be completely free of it, sadly, unless something rather major happens. Like perpetual enslavement to the Borg or something.

There are religious groups out there that have indeed spoken loudly about their eagerness for Armageddon. I don't doubt that at least some of them would try to hurry it up if they possibly could.

When will theists stop conflating Soviet and Chinese Communism with atheism? Neither of these totalitarian movements had anything to do with atheism. Both exterminated freethinkers just as eagerly as religionists. They killed no one in the name of atheism: They killed anyone who they imagined could be a threat to their power. That included artists, thinkers, teachers, scientists as well as religious groups and organizations.

It's like accusing all Germans of being Nazis.

No, I don't agree with war. War kills people in terrible terrible ways and causes unending amounts of pain to those it doesn't kill. Its not worth it.

Atheists don't glorify death. They don't make up stories about it to make themselves less afraid of it. They know that this is the only life we have and that life must be cherished because of that, not because of some book that tells people they'll have a better existance after death.

The religious think that death will be better than this life. Some of them even consistantly post about waiting for "The Rapture" in the hopes that its coming soon.

Its very disturbing that they want to hurry the end of the world.

War is a part of human civilizaton. Wars fought for land and resources are understandable, regretful but understandable. Wars fought for belief are wrong. Wars fought for politics are tricky, the world has become a giant chess game where reputation has as much, if not more, power than actual military might (although they are usualy conjoined twins). While I dislike it and wish it wasn't, there is a need for the posturing and warring in the realm of global politics. While I don't support war, or death, I do understand its necessity.

How do you mean 'agree'? Disputes arise over issues such as sovereignty, territory, resources, ideology and a peaceable resolution is not sought, fails, or is thwarted, war often results.

Do I think it is barbaric? Yes. Do I think it will be with us for a long time to come? Yes. Do I think we will eventually outgrow it? Yes. But I'm talking about geological timescales, not human life- or even multi-generational time.

edit: I was busy thinking about war and humans, I missed the rapturist thing. Yeah, those people are a tad scary.

I guarantee you that more self-identified atheists are anti-war than self-identified Christians are.

Atheists realize that death is final and destructive and should be avoided.

Atheists don't feel the need to start wars over idiotic moral differences with other countries.

You think there would have been Crusades if Europe had been atheistic?

I am not fond of war, but I see it as a necessary evil. Humans will always be in conflict with each other - be it for love, or land, or ideology, and sometimes war cannot be avoided.

Sometimes war is the only way to change the status quo.

Besides, there are advantages to war. It controls runaway birthrates, it helps create jobs, it helps catalyze technological progress.

Wars shouldn't occur amongst reasonable people, but unfortunately not all people are reasonable. I believe war is a natural part of human nature. I don't like it, but eventually, force is required to stop inequity and oppression. Discussion is the preferred method, but after it fails wars is inevitable.

I do not agree with war. I think it is only made necessary by our unwillingness to evenly distribute resources or control our population through more direct and peaceful means. If we truly learned to share and maintain our population at a sustainable level, war would be obsolete.

I do not support war.

However I do recognize that it is, at times, necessary. However war should always be approached with the utmost morality and compassion. Our enemies are still human beings, just with a different point of view.
