There are limits to the volume, but yes you can pack booze in your checked baggage. It's not so much the number of bottles, but the total volume.

In the US, check with www.tsa.gov for current limits. Outside the US, check with your airline.

If you;re flying domestically in the US, you can bring alcohol in your checked bags as long as you're over 21. If you're under 21, you will probably be just fine but some over-zealous TSA screener might confiscate it and/or report you to local law enforcement.

If you're flying only domestically in the US, there's no limit to how much you can carry but do check the airline's website to see the total weight allowance for checked bags. If you put a case of whisky in your bag, it'll be too heavy and you'll have to pay some stiff fees to get the airline to transport it.

For international travel, check with US customs (or the customs authority in the countries you are travelling between) to see the limits for duty-free import and what the taxes will be if you go over the limit.

Make sure you pack the bottles very well in bubble-wrap or something else to protect them, and seal them in a very big ziploc bag or something similar, because bags are not treated nicely and you want the alcohol to be in a sealed package in case it breaks. At least your clothes won't get soaked.

Yes, you can check alcohol in your luggage if you are over 21. Not something I would recommend as the TSA likes to check out anything liquid in you luggage and they do not repack the way you did originally so chances are it may be broken.

This is what the TSA has to say about alcohol http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/assistant/editorial_1189.shtm

If you are still unsure or have questions about what you can and can not take, it's best to call your airline and ask what their restrictions are.
