I have never taken any language besides english. i am not so good at just memorizing every word. I would like to find a way to use what I'm learning so that it becomes second nature for the exams. Any tips?

if you get vocabulary lists that focus on a theme, try to use the grammar concepts that go with the nouns and verbs and write a story or something that applies to your life.
if you actually write them in sentences chances are it will become second nature to you.

ibuena suerte!

Besides memorization you can watch a movie in spanish with english subtitles. That is what I did.

The first thing you should do is eliminate all the cognates in your vocabulary list; that is, words that look and sound similar to words in your target language. It'll make the material more relevant to you and will make the work load lighter.

Spanish is a difficult language. You may have to pull one of those "all-nighter" cram sessions. To help you stay up and be alert, considering the subject matter, instead of coffee and cigarettes, I recommend tequila and tacos.
