A 30 minute walk is plenty especially for a small dog. Bigger, stronger dogs may go longer particularly if you jog with them.

My dogs get two 45 minute walks a day and the ESS gets a 20 minute workout on the treadmill daily. Always remember "A tired dog is a well behaved dog." Some may think that is too much. But when I open the door to the basement where the treadmill is, he runs down and puts himself on the treadmill. If he wants to exercise then who am I to say no? A dog that only wants to stop and smell the "roses" is not getting exercise, if I let my male dogs stop and mark and sniff, we wouldn't get anywhere. One thing to remember The Walk is your best communicator w/ your dog. Also how many miles/ hours/ days/ weeks do you think a canine in the wild would walk just for a morsel of food? Don't put a limit to your walks and vary your walks, we don't walk the same path each and every day, make it interesting, your dog can smell the newness of a walk as he walks, he doesn't have to stop all the time.

Don't listen to Liligurl, Who owns Who? Good grief. These are the people that keep dog behaviorists in high demand.
Just know that in nature dogs walk dozens of miles at a time. Humans are extremely lazy. I go for distance and I watch my dog to see how tired they look.
Now as for a pup, I do not suggest running them on a hard surface like concrete. Grass is fine. After about a year(depending on breed) it can change, but you can walk a pup a great distance and as long as you are not making them run. I own 13 dogs, and believe me, a tired dog is a good dog. I bought a used treadmill so that I can give them the excersize they need in the house for hot or rainy days. Or if I just want to stay inside. I also have a bycicle to run the adult dogs along side of me. Some of my higher energy dogs like that better. And so do I.

I like to walk for twenty minutes or so at a brisk pace but, I do let my dogs stop and sniff and explore whatever they want because it is their walk too.
I have two bichons and the first thing I learned about walking a small dog is that small dogs take longer walks. One time around a block for a large dog equals five times around for my little guys.
I can't tell you the number of times I have been a half mile or so from home, on the way back from a long meander, and my guys just stopped. Stopped. From then on home it was no longer a walk, it was a carry.
You will learn your dog's limits and his likes and you will learn to combine yours and his so that you both have a good time and get the best from your exercise.
By the way, I never use a collar, only harnesses. Dogs slip out of collars so easily.

Walk them as much as you can, something is better than nothing at all! It all depends on age, size, and if the dog is healthly or not. I had a dog live to be sixteen and I think a big part of that was the 3 mile walk he went on almost every day!

It depends on the type of dog. Some dogs require more excercise than others. If it's a small dog like a chihuahua then a short 10 minute walk would suffice. read up on your type of dog and it should tell you....

Your getting a little too technical. Its a dog. It will be happy to run to the car and back to the house. Some are that stupid to think it actually went somewhere just by jumping in the car.

But remember if you have a large breed puppy, such as great dane, st. bernard, etc., you don't want to do too much too fast. They're still growing, and bones are still developing up to 2 years of age. Too much exercise can put a strain on those still-soft bones and do more harm than good.

Just remember that the pads on the bottom of their paws hurt after walking a long time and they also burn on hot concrete.
