'If a man is caught in the act of raping a young woman who is not engaged, he must pay fifty pieces of silver to her father. Then he must marry the young woman because he violated her, and he will never be allowed to divorce her.'

WOW, the poor girl not only gets raped, but her father makes money from it AND she is stuck with the rapist forever!

i am not christian, and need to know this is not in the teachings of religious groups, thanks

The original Hebrew text does not use the word "rape". It simply uses a word which is equivalent to "lay" which is interpreted to mean sex and makes no implications as to the state of consent. The verse to which you have referenced is for a male and female to be caught in the act and subject to the Jewish version of a "shotgun wedding". The exchange of monies was part of the tradition of the time when marriages were often arranged in the name of financial advancement. Since the father could no longer marry his daughter off for financial gain, her lover had to compensate him for that.
Do keep in mind that though these are still part of the Jewish religion, the Christian religion references them only for historical purposes and as a guide to identify what is and what is not sinful. The penalty for sin was paid for by Christ.
It is true that Christ did state that He supported the Old Testament Laws, but that was only until His purpose was fulfilled which happened at Calvary. Once He died and was resurrected, the Old Laws were superseded.

Yes, that is from Deuteronomy 22. The basic rules of rape are that a man rapes someone not engaged, the man has to marry her. If a man rapes someone engaged while out in the country, the man should be killed. If a man rapes someone engaged while in a town, the man and the woman should be killed (on the assumption that she didn't scream for help and is therefore also liable in the crime). If a man rapes (or has consensual sex with) a married woman, both of them should be put to death.

4) Laws of Rape (Deuteronomy 22:28-29 NLT)

If a man is caught in the act of raping a young woman who is not engaged, he must pay fifty pieces of silver to her father. Then he must marry the young woman because he violated her, and he will never be allowed to divorce her.

Here is the quote from KJV Bible

28 ¶ If a man find a damsel that is a virgin, which is not betrothed, and lay hold on her, and lie with her, and they be found;
29 Then the man that lay with her shall give unto the damsel's father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife; because he hath humbled her, he may not put her away all his days.
(Old Testament | Deuteronomy 22:28 - 29)

This is the heading of the chapter.

Moses sets forth laws pertaining to: lost property, wearing of proper clothes, caring for interests of others, marrying virgins, and penalties for sexual immorality.
(Old Testament | Deuteronomy 22:Heading)

It mention nothing of rape as you misunderstood, rather it is a way to remedy the situation of immoral fornication acts of two people.

It's almost impossible for a modern person to put these rules into context. A father had to find suitors for his daughters, to relieve him of the burden of caring for them. A young woman's purity was highly valued, so much so that it was guaranteed upon pain of death to be delivered to her groom.

Now, where someone takes by force this purity, whose rightful recipient is the woman's future husband, he has essentially bought himself a wife.

Now he must pay for disgracing the family and he must care for the woman forever. It's actually quite just in perspective.

If someone kills or maims your husband so he can no longer feed his family, the criminal must take on the responsibility. Because it is his fault and he must do what he can to make the situation right

Likewise, if someone steals a pearl of great value, he must do the honorable thing.

Remember also that any sex outside of marriage is bound to be regarded as rape. This provision can be understood to make clear to prospective young lovers that having sex means you are married.

Deuteronomy 2:28, 29:
"28 “If a man meets a virgin who is not betrothed, and seizes her and lies with her, and they are found,
29 then the man who lay with her shall give to the father of the young woman fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife, because he has violated her. He may not divorce her all his days.

It depends on what you mean by the teachings of religious groups. If they claim to worship the same god as the god of the Jews, then you betcha.

Yeah, but they'll deny it. Same people who are disillusioned into thinking God/Jesus is love. Oh, please...

****

I read some of these other answers; there are other instances where it says 'rape', if the girl's engaged, she gets stoned to death (pleasant, huh), when some guy (like Abraham) conquers a tribe/territory, the army takes whatever females they want as a 'prize'...I've heard the excuse that the guy is required to marry her but since when does anyone want to marry someone who just killed their family/friends? Besides, they practiced polygamy back then. It's not as if they were stuck with only that one person for the rest of their life...
You'll find that a Christian will try to twist words to mean what they want.
Oh, also Jesus says he backs the OT up 'every jot and tittle' I don't know the exact verse but I can gaurantee I read that b/c that's definitely not wording I use...ever.

The original texts say this:
First of all, its not the word rape; it is when a man SEDUCES HER and they have sex;
also keep in mind that some of those things you read were the mainstream of the times;
Gods laws have not changed, but statues and ordinances did change, and do naturally as societies change.
I am saying that because this is written in the Old testament does not mean that a guy can go out and seduce a child and then just pay her father, just because he is a Christian. You need to understand the differences between laws, statutes and ordinances.
As far as whether or not some groups teach wrongly from the Bible, hey, God only knows what some of them teach.

Deut 22:28

If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, 29 he shall pay the girl's father fifty shekels of silver. He must marry the girl, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives.
