The criminal investigation is over. The family of the victim can still file a civil case against his estate (if there's anything left).

The reality is police will 'charge' someone, or even arrest them. It's up to the DA to file charges, and the Courts to try them to see if they are guilty.
If the person dies, the DA drops the case against them.

What would you expect to happen? The police can close the case out as "cleared" by "exceptional means" (that's a UCR term). There is not much else they can do - you cannot prosecute a corpse.

They prop up the corpse in a chair in court and ask it questions. After being found guilty, they sentence it to prison and throw it in a cell until the stink becomes unbearable and the other inmates claw at the walls trying to escape from it. Then they chop it up and put it in the prison food. Case closed!

Nothing. It is a closed case because you can't prosecute a dead person.

Being a criminal I assume he or she will go to hell. But since it is an unsolved crime I suppose there was a chance for redemption and an opportunity to go to heaven.

The police don't solve it. Police work is not like what you see on TV, an hour to solve the crime
