Israel recalls 'naked ambassador'
March 16, 2007
Israel's leadership has been shaken by a string of scandals Israel has recalled its ambassador to El Salvador after he was found drunk and naked apart from bondage gear.
Reports say he was able to identify himself to police only after a rubber ball had been removed from his mouth.
A foreign ministry official described Ambassador Tzuriel Refael's behaviour as an unprecedented embarrassment.
The incident, which happened two weeks ago, has renewed calls for a radical overhaul of the way Israel appoints and promotes its diplomats.
San Salvador was Mr Refael's first post as ambassador. He was promoted in 2006 from a technical position in the ministry which had involved several foreign postings.

I am not an Israeli. Heard about it in the news. Well......also Israel's politicans are only human beings and to bad that ugly things like this happen all over the word. It's nothing Israel specific. As an ambassador in a forgein country you represent your home country and should be aware of it. Hope that everybody being involved in such an ugly incident will get punished. Not matter if Israeli or not.
I am quiete sure the oridinary Israeli is ashamed about the "nacked ambassador", but so far here on YA it's interesting to see that insteadt of giving you an answer the topic gets changed quickly by certain people and Arabs get involved. Why not South Africa or the Church in general? Totally beside the point.
Take care

It was not very ethical of him and surely inappropriate, but as far as I'm concerned this affair is an item in the back of the news paper. C'est tout.
The guy did not commit a crime. He didn't steal, embezzled, bribed, harassed, raped or traded his shares during a war; he didn't hurt anybody, as opposed to many of our politicians.
To me, a rapist president is a lot worst and embarrassing than a naked SNM ambassador.
Somehow, we, Israelis, are not easily shocked.
The news-papers and television shows regarded this story with a cynical-comic tone.

Oh, and by the way, London, Israel is considered one of the most advanced countries in THE WORLD regarding gay rights and acceptance. When was the last time you visited it?

Poor guy... we people here in Spain use to say: Each torero sometimes has a bad afternoon...
Well, what I wanna say is, that of course this behavior is very strange and it must have been an extremely embarrassing situation for that poor guy... anyway, what does somebodies private life to do with the qualities of a politician?? Did he kill or rape somebody? No! So, what?? I agree, it´s not the best behavior for somebody who is regarded as an authority and public person, but he´s still human.
He still can be a great ambassador you know...

Actualy we don't know the story. Perhaps he was kidnapped and humiliated. If he had a ball in his mouth, it may very well have been put there by captors.
In any event, that story pales in comparison with the antics of that pedophile known as Yasser Arafat. It can be stated with certainty that Arafat was not being victimized by the boys he exploited sexually. And that was over a period of many years, not like the one-time experience of the ambassador to El Salvador, whatever may have happened there.
So let us put things in proportion.

There are politicians in Israel who do much more embarassing things, like our President. So I don't really think too much about it.
EDIT: London, when was the last time you were in Israel? Israel is probably one of the 10 most tolerant countries in the world towards gays. We have the biggest (if not only) gay pride parade in the Middle East each year in Tel Aviv in which 200,000 people show up.

Yes , well we know why he had a rubber ball in his mouth don't we ? How does that song go ...."it's a fine line between pleasure & pain ....blah , blah blah ". Sorry can't sing or dance ! Maybe if all politicians & their hired help behaved like this we'd have less wars .

I didn't hear of that story--could you post a link? It sounds pretty sick, if it's true. On the other hand, who are we to judge--look at all the gays who shamelessly go around and spread disease and do sick, twisted gay stuff. A "tolerant" society is supposed to condone evil gays.

A much more interesting question would be how do Israelis live side by side with gay folk these days?
When I was there a while back it was a very far underground movement. Not really tolerated in the open.
