I've been contemplating my second tattoo for years, the first just didn't have much meaning, and I want to be able to hide it for work. I finally decided that underneath my arm, right above my armpit would be really cute and discreet, but many of my tattoed friends have scared me, saying I'm crazy. I have a high threshhold for pain, but I don't want to get started and be unable to finish. Any suggestions or experience would be great.

"It's all in your head".

Pain is what we make it, like a lot of things in life. Don't listen to your friends! The worst thing you can do is to psych yourself out, because I can guarantee you, that will magically cause you more "pain" than the actual tattoo itself!

No one will lie to you - under arm tattoos are rumored to be very painful, due to the sensitive nature of the area the work is being done. If you have a high pain tolerence, however, you will most likely be able to handle it.

Every person feels the sting of the needle differently than the next, so no one can give you a definitive answer on this one -- but if this is something you have your heart set on, go for it!! After all, what's a few hours of discomfort in comparison to a beautiful tattoo you're going to have for the rest of your life?

Under the arm does hurt worse than on the top part, don't let people fool you!!!!! And I have known a couple of people that have started a tattoo and wouldn't get it finished (both guys) but given that if you have a high tolerance for pain and you want it bad enough, then go for it!!!!!

Good luck

I have one inside of my upper arm it was pretty painful, but more weird cause of all the tattooing on tendons and nerves. So my arm was kinda uncontrollable.

If you are talking about on the body of that region (i.e. your ribs but high up near your armpit) I have heard that can be pretty tender too. But it does depend on your threshold for pain, and it is pretty awesome to get one there and hold your own.

I have know people to get arm bands and not be able to take the pain on the inside if that is an indicator. Good Luck in where ever you decide to get it.

i have found that tattoo pain is all relative. and you have had one before so you know that there is some pain involved. nobody i know has been unable to finish a tattoo once it has begun and i have a lot of tattooed friends. this past weekend i got a particularly painful tattoo but there was no way i was going to stop or take a break. i make a game of it, how much pain can i take?

It hurts. Is it unbearable? Hardly, lots of people have tattoos there, including myself. If that's where you want to get it, then do it and just deal with the pain. To me having an unfinished tattoo is way worse than sitting through a couple hours of discomfort.

Why bother it I think of tattoos as an expression of yourself. No one except a lover would ever see it and you would have difficulty seeing it. Oh well do what ever you like but I would find another place to hide a tat a work.

I think you will be ok. You say you have a high threshhold for pain? Are your friends saying your crazy because of the placement of the tat as far as the pain issue or just from the standpoint of where it is to be located? Go back and talk to your artist and see what he or she has to say.
