I would like to give some nice gifts and some gag gifts, but certainly don't want to step over any lines.

Any help would be appreciated.

Pick something off the registry. My MIL asked us what we REALLY wanted and needed off the registry, regardless of price. We picked our comforter set (~$200) and our toaster oven (~$100). To our surprise, she purchased both of them, which was really sweet.

I don't know about gag gifts from an MIL though, unless you have a really good relationship with your future DIL. Depending on her personality, she may be embarrassed, especially by any lingerie or similar items. Personally, I'd be really uncomfortable opening any sex related items from my husband's mother.

Stick with something off their registry.

What kind of shower? pantry? Jack and Jill? Lingerie?

My mum gave my sister in law an ironing board and a laundry basket filled with an iron, downey, tide, bleach etc.

My idiot sister in law thought the ironing board was a surf board . Yeah like she was gonna surf on lake erie.

If it's a pantry shower, a cookbook with all the groceries packed into a baking pan or crock pot, with maybe a rolling pin.

If it's a lingerie shower , well you can go almost anywhere with that.

Jack and Jill, maybe some good wine and a wine cooler and a cork screw and those bags that make ice cubes.

Or what about a picnic basket, with a gift certificate for frozen foods, some candles, some romantic music cds and a small habacci or george foreman grill?

My son was married a year ago and I flew up for my future daughter-in-laws shower ... they had just finished up their registry and she had really wanted something he thought was stupid (it went on the registry anyway :-) ... when i asked him what I should get her, he said get something for her, something she really wants and he told me the registry story... so i got the item that he had poo-pooed. I think as the mother of the groom(MOG) getting something for the daughter-in-law is better than say getting her a barbeque set that he would primarily use. So ask him. Also another nice gift is to give something that has been in your family. One shower i went to the MOG gave a silver tray that had been passed down in the family by mother in laws (MIL) to their future daughters in law (DIL)...so it was 4 generations of giving by MILs to DILs....with all their initials engraved on the tray...really special and maybe a tradition you could begin. I don't think you can step over the line ... but i wore beige at the wedding and kept my mouth shut :-) Which is what I should have done at my daughters wedding this past weekend. Anyway good luck and enjoy!

Nice gifts would be things they would need for the house. Gag gifts, well depends on how much of a sense of humor your soon to be daughter in law has. If it is something that might embarrass her, give it to her when no one is around... Fun things might be some lingerie or a fun dirty book, but nothing eatable. That would freak me out if I received that from my soon to be mother in law!!

A book or box of your favorite family recipes...especially if you have any that have been handed down from past generations in your family.......a very very conservative flannel nightgown or granny panties....get with the brides mom and get a bunch of baby picts and embarrassing picts of the bride through the years and make a photo collage frame of both their most embarrassing pics thru the years.....let's see...oh yeah, since Mom's are always "prepared" make a gift basket of the must have items...like pepto, preparation H, aspirin, vicks vapor rub, condoms...and you can pass down something sentimental that's been in your family and end it and redeem your self from the granny panites with a piece of sexy lingerie!
