Last night I watched a program about people having problems with property I was horrified.Churchs are using a 1,000 year old law to make people pay for the church repairs a couple took them to court & lost they now have to pay £200,000 to church & £200,000 court costs. They are trying to sell there home to pay the bills & quess what the church do not care.Call that religion so I say the people own them & should take the property back & throw them out.

At least in the western hemisphere, churches are owned by the denomination that established them. In some countries, churches do not pay property tax. In the case of the Roman Catholic Church, all the real estate is ultimately owned by the Vatican. They have a corporate structure most developed nations envy.

I depends on the denomination. The Church of England owns the C of E churches, the Catholic church the Catholic ones, etc. However, the council may also own some places of worship (as a church I know meets in a Village Hall, and pays rent), and the individual church community may own its own meeting place.

C of E churches are owned by the Diocese and repaired, insured, heated etc. by the parish - a continuing nightmare of expense if like us you are lucky (?) enough to have a huge, gorgeous, medieval Grade I listed building and a very small congregation.

The church of England owns a lot of property, you can guarantee it owns all its churches. I don't know about other religions.

Some are privately funded by endowments - some are private property of the individual parish, some are government property. It depends.
